If you’re looking for a hotel in Serrapetrona, you can plan your trip around your interests in church art, landscapes or wine tradition. It’s also important to consider the different types of visits when planning: churches have specific visiting hours, while competitions and Appassimenti Aperti are tied to event dates.

Church art and visiting hours

The Church of San Francesco was built by the Friars Minor in the 14th century. Its presbytery houses the large polyptych by Lorenzo d’Alessandro of Sanseverino, commissioned by the Friars Minor between 1494 and 1496. A polyptych is a multi-panel altarpiece; visiting the church therefore combines architectural history with an important work of art. San Francesco is open on Sunday mornings and public holidays. On other days, visits can be arranged by contacting the municipality at +39 0733 908 321. Check the visiting arrangements again before your trip.

Santa Maria di Piazza is another destination for art lovers: the church reopened in November 2018 after 21 years of closure and now houses 26 works of art salvaged from other churches in the area that were damaged by the earthquake. Visits are possible on Sundays and public holidays from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; reservations are required on other days. Its visiting hours differ from those at San Francesco, so bear this in mind if you plan to visit both churches.

Museums with different focuses

The Museo dell’Uomo is housed in a 12th-century tower. Agricultural equipment, millstones and traditional tools tell the story of everyday life before industrialisation. The museum was temporarily closed after the 2016 earthquake. Check current access arrangements before visiting.

The Vecchio Mulino del Borgo was once used to grind grain and has been converted into a Centro Turistico Culturale. The building houses the Museo dell’Olio. It displays historic furnishings and machinery from the early 20th century in an authentic setting, with a brick floor and period household objects. The two museums cover different periods: the Museo dell’Uomo focuses on everyday life before industrialisation, while the Museo dell’Olio showcases furnishings and machinery from the early 20th century.

Lake, landscapes and route

Lake Caccamo is mainly used for fishing and is also suitable for rowing. Sailing regattas and rowing competitions take place there on weekends and in summer. If you’re planning your trip specifically around a competition, check the exact event dates in advance.

From Monte d’Aria, panoramic views stretch from the Camerino basin across the Sibillini Mountains and, on clear days, as far as the sea. Visibility is part of the experience: views all the way to the coast are described for clear days. Another way to explore the area is the “Attraverso i vigneti” route, which ends in the medieval centre of Serrapetrona.

Wine tradition at Appassimenti Aperti

During Appassimenti Aperti, wineries open their doors and producers explain their work. Visitors can learn about the traditional practice of laying out some of the grapes to dry for weeks before winemaking. Tastings take place in the square and at the wineries; tasting glasses with sample vouchers are available on site. Check the exact event dates and arrangements before your trip so you can plan your visit around what’s actually on offer.
