Caldarola brings together architecture and fortified sites with the landscapes around Lago di Pievefavera. Palazzo Pallotta stands at its center; other buildings, museums and trails reveal different aspects of the town. As you plan your trip, you can consider whether you are most interested in architecture and art, historical traces, or the trails and waterways in the surrounding area.

Palaces, Castles and Works of Art

Palazzo Pallotta stands in the center of Caldarola and, together with the Collegiata di San Martino, forms an important architectural complex. The palazzo is considered a clear example of Mannerist Renaissance architecture. The Stanza del Paradiso features depictions of exotic plants and animals, as well as hunting scenes with rearing horses, greyhounds and hunters.

Castello Pallotta, also known as Castello di Caldarola, was built on a hill in the second half of the 9th century. Its walls, Guelph crenellations, ramparts and drawbridge have been preserved. Toward the end of the 16th century, Cardinal Evangelista Pallotta had the complex extensively altered and converted into a summer residence. The castle also includes a carriage room, saddle rooms and weapons. Comparing it with the palazzo reveals two different architectural emphases: Mannerist Renaissance on the one hand, and the fortified complex with its preserved structural features on the other.

The surrounding districts also preserve their own architectural forms. Castello di Croce is a fortification in the da Varano tradition; its pointed-arch entrance leads into a small courtyard with a cistern. Castello di Croce contains works by Nobile da Lucca, as well as frescoes by Andrea, Simone and Federico De Magistris. Castello di Vestignano is characterized by strong defensive walls, a cylindrical tower, square-plan towers and narrow lanes. Its preserved works also include wall paintings by Simone and Andrea De Magistris and Nobile da Lucca. There are also remains of a temple dedicated to Saint George, associated with the Lombards of the 8th century, including paintings and a 13th-century sculpture of Saint Martin.

Pievefavera: Churches and Archaeological Traces

In Pievefavera, the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta brings together different periods: built in the 12th century, it is a Baroque church with a round-arched portal and early medieval decoration. An open-air antiquarium is located in its churchyard. The Antiquarium ed Area Archeologica di Pievefavera includes excavated rooms, some of which have a well-preserved spicatum floor. The structural remains may have belonged to the agricultural section of a large villa; their oldest phase may date back to the Republican period.

The antiquarium has specific visiting arrangements to factor into your plans: in autumn and winter, guided tours are available by reservation; in spring and summer, it is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 16:30 to 18:30. Check the visiting information before you travel. The museums in the area also include the Museo di Arte Povera Contadina “Luigi Fagianella,” with about 1,500 objects documenting everyday life and agricultural work in the Marche region in the 20th century. The Museo Civico della Resistenza comprises the Pinacoteca della Resistenza, a section on Caldarola Sistina, and rooms for temporary exhibitions.

Other places to see art include the 16th-century Cappella di Santa Maria della Croce. It is located on the provincial road by Lago di Caccamo, opposite the entrance to the Pievefavera cemetery. The chapel preserves a fresco cycle depicting the enthroned Madonna and Child, as well as Saints Paul, Joseph, Sebastian and Roch. As of August 30, 2026, the Teatro Comunale was operating; visits were possible in conjunction with theater events. Check the program before your trip.

Lake, Landscape and Trails

Lago di Pievefavera is an artificial reservoir created in 1954 to supply electricity to the surrounding towns. It is also known as Lago di Caccamo or Lago di Borgiano. Its abundant fish stocks make it a popular spot for sport fishing; rowing also takes place there, and numerous regattas are held throughout the year. If a regatta is important to your plans, check the dates before your trip.

The landscape around Castello Pievefavera offers a different view of the area: olive trees cover the hills as they gradually slope down toward the lake. The trail to the Cascatelle di Valcimarra runs through the forest alongside Fosso Cimarra. Small wooden houses and gnome figures are among the installations along the trail. A walk through the forest and the lakeside landscape offer two different nature experiences, without assuming any particular walking time or level of difficulty.

The Le vie dei castelli route starts in the center of Caldarola and passes through the districts of Vestignano, Croce, Pievefavera and Valcimarra. The Sentieri Storici Partigiani run through hills, forests and ridgelines and are associated with the resistance during the Second World War. Another route leads to the Abbatia Sancti Benedicti De crypta Saxi Latronis: it lies on the Cammino Francescano della Marca, and an uphill turnoff above the Santuario Madonna del Sasso leads there.

Keep Visiting Conditions in Mind

As of August 30, 2026, the Santuario Madonna del Sasso – Valcimarra was temporarily closed due to earthquake damage. Check its status before your trip. For a culinary addition, Il Picciolo di Rame serves traditional dishes from the cuisine of Macerata, based on rural recipes and, in some cases, medieval and Renaissance recipes. This lets you include a regional culinary tradition in your choices alongside buildings, landscapes and trails.
