Massa: Loop Trail and Nature
Accommodation in Massa
When looking for a hotel in Massa, it helps to first organize your travel interests. The “Anello del Potenza Pioraco–Massa–Pioraco” loop trail leads to Massa; the Fonte del Piscio picnic area is nearby. Art, the townscape, and culinary tradition are other themes that can be explored in connection with Fiuminata. This lets you distinguish between a loop with known route measurements, a picnic spot, and insights into art and history as you plan.
The Potenza Loop Trail
The loop trail is 9.2 km long and has 100 m of elevation gain. It reaches Massa at the roadside at the start of the fifth bridge; it then follows the left riverbank back to the wooden bridge. The distance and elevation gain give you two concrete figures to use in your planning. Trail conditions may vary.
Fonte del Piscio Picnic Area
The Fonte del Piscio picnic area is near Massa, at the foot of Colle Corno at an altitude of about 1,000 m and close to a beech forest. The altitude should be understood as an approximate figure. The area has barbecue spots, a large fountain, and large tables. It offers a different focus for planning your day than the loop trail: here, the emphasis is on a place for an outdoor picnic; on the loop, you can use the distance, elevation gain, and route along the riverbank as points of reference.
Nature in Parco Adamo Grilli
In Parco Adamo Grilli, green spaces with large wooden tables invite you to enjoy outdoor picnics. The park also has accessible paths for people with reduced mobility, families with strollers, and older visitors. The park is also home to the Stoni, small spring-fed ponds that provide a habitat for numerous plant and animal species.
Art and Local History in Fiuminata
In Fiuminata, the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta stands in the upper part of town; from there, the settlement extends downhill toward the plain below. The paintings in the church were created around the mid-1920s in collaboration between Emilio Lazzari and Corrado Pellini.
A collection includes two paintings of the Madonna del Rosario. One dates from the 16th century and comes from the parish church in Poggio Sorifa; the other dates from the 18th century and comes from the parish church of S. Cassiano. The different centuries and churches of origin give each painting its own historical context.
The Deposito Beni Culturali Diotallevi di Angeluccio is housed in a large hall in Palazzo Lori. It preserves numerous works of art from the churches of the town and the surrounding area.
The Fontana Storica di Fiuminata served as the main water supply point for the entire community. As a historical landmark, it complements the artworks from the churches with an aspect of everyday community life. Crescia Fogliata is Fiuminata’s traditional sweet, adding a culinary note alongside art and local history.
