Roman Finds and Historic Architecture

A Roman mosaic floor discovered in 1972 is preserved in Piazza G. Garibaldi. Excavations in the piazza also uncovered a large Roman residential complex. Its features include mosaic floors and colonnades, as well as baths with stepped pools clad in marble and mosaics. The finds offer a glimpse into different aspects of Roman domestic life, from floor design to bathing facilities.

The Domus romana adds to this picture. Three adjoining rooms and part of a fourth were discovered beneath the courtyard of a palazzo; their floors were decorated with polychrome geometric mosaics. The layout of the rooms and the colourful patterns make this a distinct archaeological point of interest alongside the residential complex in Piazza G. Garibaldi.

The Teatro G. Piermarini was designed by Giuseppe Piermarini around 1805 and inaugurated in 1812. The sequence of events—the design followed by the later inauguration—is part of its history, as is the architect's name. The Church of San Francesco was built around the middle of the 13th century. Its Romanesque portal is the only surviving part of the original building. The theatre and church offer contrasting points of interest: a design from the early 19th century on the one hand, and a medieval church with a preserved portal on the other.

Art, Squares and Sacred History

The Museo Piersanti houses a wooden crucifix of Sant'Eutizio, dated to between 1160 and 1170. In Braccano, you can experience a different form of art: the village is a free-to-visit open-air gallery filled with colourful murals. They were created by students from the academies of Brera, Macerata and Urbino, as well as established artists. The murals offer a contemporary contrast to Matelica's historic artworks and buildings.

In Piazza Enrico Mattei stands a fountain made of white stone and built in 1587. It is octagonal and decorated with four statues of sea deities. Its shape, material and figures offer specific details to look for as you take in the square.

Near Braccano lies the Abbazia di Santa Maria di Rotis, accessible via a walking trail. In the Middle Ages, the abbey's monastery served as a stop for pilgrims. The site thus combines access today via a walking trail with the monastery's historical role.

Landscape and Trails Around Matelica

The Riserva Naturale Regionale del Monte San Vicino e del Monte Canfaito also includes Matelica. Established in 2009, it covers approximately 1,500 hectares. Its notable natural and cultural features include beech forests, panoramic landscapes, and anthropological and archaeological heritage. This means you can combine the natural area with scenic experiences as well as cultural and archaeological interests when planning your trip.

A trail follows a stream fed by a spring to the waterfall at Gola di Jana. The Abbazia di Santa Maria di Rotis is also accessible via a walking trail; the two destinations offer different reasons to include walks in your plans, but they are not described as part of a single route. The Ciclovia dell'Esino offers another way to experience the landscape, by bike: the section between Matelica and Esanatoglia runs through areas where Verdicchio di Matelica DOC and DOCG grapes are grown. Along the way, there are views of Monte San Vicino, Monte Gemmo and Monte Corsegno.

The Verdicchio di Matelica area produces the wine “Verdicchio di Matelica DOC” and “Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva DOCG,” each governed by its own production regulations. Together with the vineyards along the Ciclovia, these offer another perspective on the landscape's regional character.
