If you are looking for a hotel in Camerino, start by considering what you want your stay to focus on: architectural history, landscape, an event or regional confectionery. The following topics differ in their historical, geographical and seasonal focus.

Architectural history and landscape

The Palazzo Ducale grew out of three buildings dating from the 13th to the 15th century and was expanded by Giulio Cesare da Varano. Its four-sided courtyard and panoramic balcony overlooking the Sibillini Mountains add a landscape dimension to its architectural history: the building’s layout takes centre stage in the courtyard, while the balcony offers views of the mountains.

The Rocca Varano offers a different perspective. It was built at the beginning of the 12th century on a steep rocky spur between the Chienti valleys and the San Luca stream. The comparison therefore focuses on the palace complex developed from several buildings on the one hand, and the early fortress built on a rocky spur on the other.

Culture and travel dates

When planning a visit to the Teatro Filippo Marchetti, it is especially important to check access: following the 2016 earthquake, it is currently unusable; a virtual tour offers an alternative. If you are considering an in-person visit, check access before you travel.

The Corsa alla Spada e Palio is a historical reenactment that links devotion to Camerino’s patron saint, San Venanzio, with the rule of Giulio Cesare da Varano. The festival lasts ten days. The main days are 17 May, the eve of San Venanzio, and the Sunday after 18 May. If this event is a deciding factor for your trip, check the dates for the year you plan to visit.

Rolling hills and botanical themes

The area around Camerino is predominantly hilly. It includes cultivated fields, forests, centuries-old oaks and valleys, as well as heights crowned with towers and castles. The Oasi di San Vito-Arcofiato offers a specific example of this landscape: the 526-hectare protected area lies along the Camerino-Sfercia provincial road and is an example of the biodiversity-rich landscape of the upper hills of the Marche region.

The history of the University of Camerino’s “Carmela Cortini” Botanical Garden also introduces a distinct nature theme. It was founded in 1828 by Prof. Vincenzo Ottaviani as a place for cultivating medicinal plants. This original purpose differs from the nature reserve and landscape perspective of the Oasi: here, the history of medicinal plant cultivation takes centre stage.

Routes and a regional speciality

The Ciclovia del Chienti e del Potenza is a cycling route of around 340 kilometres. It crosses two provinces and 16 municipalities, including Camerino. Another option is the “Alla scoperta della Fonte di Figareto” route: it leads from the Chiesa di Palente to the Figareto ravine, continues to the Fonte di Figareto spring and ends in Selvazzano. Parts of this route lie outside the town centre.

Torrone di Camerino is a De.Co. speciality with a confectionery-making tradition dating back more than a century. At “Alla scoperta del Torrone Camerinese,” you can sample the soft centre of the torrone. Before your trip, check whether a tasting is available on your preferred date.
