Ceramics are one of Appignano’s defining features: they play a role in workshop activities, museum tours and artworks. Churches and the Sentiero del Coppo along the Monocchia offer different points of interest. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you’d like to work with clay yourself, learn about the history of ceramics, or focus on architecture and artworks.

Experience and Discover Ceramics

The Scuola di Ceramica in Appignano offers courses and workshops open to everyone. In the “Una giornata al tornio” workshop, participants make a small object from clay. It is then fired in a kiln and remains with them as a souvenir. The activity is suitable for all ages; children aged six and over can take part when accompanied. Before your trip, check current availability and review dates, booking conditions and participant rules.

The MArC – Museo dell’Arte della Ceramica features a museum tour on Roman pottery and brick production, with significant finds from Collina del Sole. A second tour, “Le cocce de Pignà. Il mistero primitivo”, introduces the Appignano traditions of “cocce” and “coccià”. The museum thus presents Roman production and a local ceramic tradition as distinct subjects.

Outside the museum, too, the craft features in Appignano’s art and local history. Via dei Vasai tells the story of a centuries-old ceramic tradition through old kilns, master craftspeople and artistic innovation. The Opera del Bellente is a painted ceramic work depicting Pietro Masi, known as Bellente, who resisted conscription under Napoleon. At the Fontana di Borgo XX Settembre, a blue mosaic and colorful ceramic tiles made by Appignano’s master potters decorate the fountain. Sculptures, amphorae and jugs make it feel like a small open-air gallery.

Churches and Historical Traces

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista has an 18th-century main structure and a Gothic bell tower; it also preserves traces of the fortifications dating from 1443. The Chiesa di Santa Tecla contains the Cappella dei Santi and an ornate 19th-century reliquary shrine holding five thousand relics. The two churches therefore offer different historical and artistic points of interest.

At the Convento di Forano, part of a 15th-century fresco of the Annunciation is still visible around an old oak door. The door is traditionally associated with Saint Francis. A hospice stood in the convent grounds between the 12th and 13th centuries; there were probably also Benedictine settlements there. Appignano is still surrounded by a distinctive town wall.

Riverside Trail and Practical Information

The Sentiero del Coppo follows the Monocchia through spontaneous vegetation and past scenic landscapes. Its focus differs from that of the workshops and museum: here, the river, vegetation and landscape take center stage. No walking time or route length is specified, so plan your visit according to the information available to you.

The Fontana di Borgo XX Settembre is accessible by car. Free parking is available, as well as reserved spaces for people with disabilities. Since these are practical parking arrangements, check them before you travel. This makes it easy to combine a visit to the ceramic fountain with Appignano’s other art and history highlights, without treating all the different places as if they had the same focus.

A Time-Specific Look at Local Cuisine

The 23rd edition of Leguminaria took place in Appignano in October 2025. For that edition, chickpeas, beans and lentils were prepared in the traditional way and served at the historic center’s traditional venues. This date refers to that edition at the time; it does not indicate future dates.
