Castelsantangelo sul Nera combines its mountain setting with distinct natural and cultural themes. The town lies at an altitude of about 760 metres, between the upper Nera Valley, the slopes of Cornaccione and Monte Cardosa. Key features include the Nera springs, the historic relationship between water and community, and churches built in different periods. The memory of the Battle of Pian Perduto is also part of the town’s history.

Landscape, water and trails

The Nera springs emerge in the meadows of Vallinfante, just above Castelsantangelo sul Nera. The route there is considered easy and accessible, and is also suitable for family walks. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

On the southern slope of Cornaccione, between Castelsantangelo sul Nera and Vallinfante, the Centro Faunistico Il Cervo covers about 29 hectares. This wildlife-park-like area is home to deer and roe deer living in natural surroundings in semi-freedom. It complements the springs and river with a different perspective on the landscape: here, animals and life close to nature take centre stage.

On the banks of the Nera, the Fonte della Salute picnic area has tables, benches, a drinking fountain and permanent barbecue facilities. If you plan to visit, you can check the condition of the facilities beforehand, as they may change. The site combines a riverside visit with practical options for an outdoor break.

Water routes and regional trails

The “Museo dell’Acqua all’aperto” route traces the historic relationship between the Nera and the local community through mills, sawmills, trout farms and hydroelectric power stations. Along this route, water is not only part of the landscape but also the basis for various activities. These features give the theme a tangible historical focus.

Other routes each have their own focus. Castelsantangelo sul Nera is the final stage of the “La Grande Via del Parco dei Monti Sibillini” cycling itinerary. The two-day “I Prodotti IGP delle Marche” route focuses on regional foods and also passes through the town. This places a cycling trip and a food-focused route alongside trails that explore the Nera springs and history.

Churches and traces of history

In Gualdo, the Church of San Martino was built in the Romanesque style at the end of the 13th century. The Church of Santa Maria in Vallinfante also dates from the 13th century; its richly decorated Baroque wooden altar dates from the 17th century. The Church of Santo Stefano contains a stone baptismal font from the 14th century. The Church of San Sebastiano was built in 1528 in a simple, linear architectural style. Together, these architectural and decorative details span the Middle Ages and the Baroque period.

The defensive walls are also historical landmarks: parts of them still retain their walkways and battlements. If you would like to visit individual sections, check access locally. Another trace of the area’s past is the Fonte di San Lorenzo. For centuries, it served as a watering place for animals while grazing and along the transhumance routes.

The Battle of Pian Perduto was fought against Norcia in July 1522 and remains part of local memory. It is also recounted in a poem written in ottava rima by Berrettaccia, a shepherd and poet from Castelsantangelo sul Nera.

Among the historic customs was the tradition of Gualdo and Castelluccio coming to Castelsantangelo sul Nera for centuries on the first Sunday in July. The gatherings included a procession, a Mass, singing, dancing and banquets. This account describes the past; it does not indicate a current event date.
