The cultural themes of Molino range from milling history and fortified architecture to archaeological sites and collections. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these interests: architectural forms and historical functions offer a different perspective from the dating of a settlement or a museum’s collections.

Mills and fortified architecture

The Natalini brothers acquired an existing grain mill in 1881. The present-day Molino Natalini building was completed in 1890. The two dates therefore refer to different events: the acquisition of the older mill in 1881 and the completion of the present-day building in 1890.

In the municipality of Pollenza, near the Potenza River, stands the Torre del Mulino di Monte Milone. It was used to monitor the passage of travellers and goods along the Potenza Valley and is considered one of the most significant examples of a fortified mill in the valley. It has a square floor plan with a sloping base below. Above this, three storeys rise to the roof level.

The Torre’s surviving and lost features also tell the story of its form: the roof and the presumed crenellated parapet are completely lost. The coat of arms of the former Monte Milone municipality can still be seen above the bricked-up pointed-arch tracery window. The residential buildings added in the 19th century block the main entrance, which is accessible only from inside the adjoining structures.

The mills offer different points of focus: the Molino Natalini centres on the acquisition of an existing grain mill and the completion of the present-day building. The Torre adds a fortified architectural form and its former function at a crossing through the Potenza Valley.

Archaeology and historical periods

On Monte Franco, an archaeological settlement site dates from the Iron Age to the Roman Imperial period. The wider region around Molino is also home to the Grotte del Diavolo: two prehistoric caves above the Potenza Valley that were used as cremation necropolises. The region thus brings together settlement and burial sites that reveal different aspects of early history.

The medieval castle of Castel Franco stood on Monte Franco around the 10th to 11th century. This period is considerably later than that of the settlement site, which dates from the Iron Age to the Roman Imperial period. Both subjects relate to Monte Franco but represent different historical eras.

The Abbazia di Santa Maria di Rambona offers another architectural perspective. The abbey dates from the 9th century. Its Romanesque crypt has five small aisles, divided by Roman columns with Romanesque capitals. Here, different architectural elements come together within a clearly defined space.

Collections and gates in Pollenza

The Museo Civico in Palazzo Cento in Pollenza displays paintings, local ceramics, antique furniture and archaeological finds. These include Roman mosaics and statues discovered in Montefrancolo. The collection thus encompasses art and everyday objects as well as archaeological artefacts.

Pollenza has three entrance gates: Porta del Colle, Porta Santa Croce and Porta Nuova. Their names offer another point of interest if you are drawn to Pollenza’s architectural and local heritage.

An archaeological link along a cycling route

The ancient necropolis of Montefranco lies along the cycle route “Ciclovia del Chienti e Potenza > Giro: POLLENZA - TREIA,” on the descent towards Passo di Treia. This specific route connection adds a cycling perspective to the archaeological themes without conflating the different settlements and find sites into a single destination.

If you are looking for a hotel for a cultural trip to Molino, choosing a personal focus can make planning easier: the mills and Torre offer insights into architectural forms and historical functions, while Monte Franco, the caves and the collections provide other ways to explore history.
