Potsdam-Mittelmark offers a range of options for a trip: medieval castles, palaces with a history of their own, routes through forests and countryside, and activities by the water. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in the region, you can start by considering which of these themes you want your trip to focus on.

Castles and Palaces in Potsdam-Mittelmark

Burg Eisenhardt stands above Bad Belzig as a cultural landmark where visitors can experience the Middle Ages firsthand. In the Middle Ages, Burg Ziesar was an important episcopal residence. Its well-preserved architecture gives the town another historical dimension: here, you can explore the religious and political history of Potsdam-Mittelmark.

Schloss Wiesenburg exemplifies Renaissance architecture and is surrounded by a landscaped park. Schloss Reckahn offers a different focus: it is dedicated to the life and work of the Prussian reformer Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow. The permanent exhibition “Reason for the People” has been on display there since 2001. The historical themes thus range from a medieval episcopal residence and castle to the Renaissance and the work of a Prussian reformer.

Hiking, Forests and Historic Routes

The Hoher Fläming defines Potsdam-Mittelmark with its dense forests, gentle hills and historic castles. The 148-kilometre Burgenwanderweg runs through the entire Hoher Fläming Nature Park, connecting the region’s four castles. The Europaradweg R1 also passes through Potsdam-Mittelmark, by landscapes and historic towns. The two routes offer different perspectives on the region: the Burgenwanderweg connects castles, while the R1 brings landscapes and towns together on a cycling route.

The Baumkronenpfad in the forest park of the Beelitz Sanatoriums offers a different kind of experience. The elevated path is almost a kilometre long and leads through a species-rich mixed forest and the historic buildings of the former A-Quadrant.

The Beelitzer Spargelstraße connects the asparagus farms in the districts of the town of Beelitz. You can follow it by car or along cycling and hiking paths. As the route signs may change, it is a good idea to check the signposting before setting out. The Europaradweg R1, the Burgenwanderweg and the Spargelstraße each offer a different focus: a cycling route, a castle hike and a route between asparagus farms.

Water and Relaxation

There are also a range of options by the water. The municipality of Wusterwitz on Lake Wusterwitz offers opportunities for water sports as well as cycling and hiking tours. At Beetzsee, water sports opportunities meet species-rich landscapes and protected areas. In the municipality of Kloster Lehnin, the forests and lake scenery, along with Klostersee, offer opportunities to relax.

The municipality of Schwielowsee is considered one of the most beautiful water sports regions in the Mark Brandenburg. Caputh, Ferch and Geltow combine art and culture with a maritime atmosphere. These places and landscapes show that water in Potsdam-Mittelmark is more than just a backdrop: it is linked to specific leisure activities and a distinct cultural character.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Trip

When planning, you can distinguish between the themes by type and scale: castles and palaces offer historical points of interest, the Baumkronenpfad is almost a kilometre long, and the Burgenwanderweg covers 148 kilometres. By the water, the focus is on water sports as well as cycling and hiking tours in the municipality of Wusterwitz and at Beetzsee. Decide which of these options matters to you before looking for a hotel in Potsdam-Mittelmark. This way, your search reflects your planned stay without assuming a particular hotel or location.
