Seddiner See: Hiking, Swimming and Culture
Accommodation in Seddiner See
Seddiner See borders all three villages in the municipality: Kähnsdorf, Neuseddin and Seddin. This gives you different options when planning your trip. The circular trail, swimming area and cultural barn offer different ways to spend time outdoors or enjoy cultural activities.
At Seddiner See: hiking and swimming
The Seddiner See circular trail runs along field paths and the lakeshore as far as Kähnsdorf. If you enjoy walking, the same route takes you along both field paths and a stretch of lakeshore. Kähnsdorf is the trail’s destination; it is also home to the beach swimming area and the cultural barn. You can therefore include both exercise and other interests in your plans for the day.
The beach swimming area in Kähnsdorf has a gently sloping entry into the water and is family-friendly, making it a practical option for a day of swimming. There is also boat rental at Seddiner See. If you plan to rent a boat, check availability in advance.
Culture in Kähnsdorf
The Kähnsdorf local history museum and cultural barn opened in spring 2001 as a cultural center for the municipality. Art exhibitions and events are often held in the cultural barn. The opening was a historic milestone; if you are travelling for a specific event, check the date in advance. This helps distinguish the site’s historical role from planning for a particular visit.
When planning, you can compare the activities by type: the circular trail combines field and lakeside sections, the swimming area has a gently sloping entry into the water, and exhibitions or events are often held in the cultural barn. Plan your stay around whether you would rather hike, spend time by the water or attend a cultural event.
Culture and landscape in Potsdam-Mittelmark
Potsdam-Mittelmark also has plenty to offer those interested in culture and landscapes. In the Hoher Fläming, dense forests, gentle hills and historic castles shape the landscape. The 148-kilometre castle trail leads through the entire Hoher Fläming Nature Park and connects four castles; it also passes through Bad Belzig and Wiesenburg. Above Bad Belzig, Eisenhardt Castle is a cultural landmark where visitors can experience the Middle Ages firsthand.
In the Middle Ages, Ziesar Castle was an important bishop’s residence and is notable for its well-preserved architecture. Visitors can immerse themselves in the religious and political history of Potsdam-Mittelmark there. Wiesenburg Castle is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture surrounded by a landscaped park. The permanent exhibition “Reason for the People” has been on display at Reckahn Castle since 2001; the castle is dedicated to the life and work of the Prussian reformer Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow. In the forest park at Beelitz-Heilstätten, a treetop walk almost one kilometre long passes through biodiverse mixed woodland and the historic buildings of the former A quadrant.
