Niemegk combines historic buildings with a soda museum, hiking and cycling routes, and recurring festivals. If you are looking for a hotel in Niemegk, these different themes can help you plan your stay: Would you like to discover architectural history, choose a route or plan your trip around an event date?

Town History and Buildings

The town hall is a Renaissance building. After its destruction in 1547, it was rebuilt on the same site in 1570, on a larger scale. The 1725 post-mile column offers another historical point of reference, recalling the town’s former affiliation with Electoral Saxony. Together, the town hall and column illustrate different chapters of Niemegk’s history.

St. John’s Church stands out for its red brick and tall, slender tower, which defines the townscape. It is also a stop on the signposted town walking tour. You can register and obtain a key from the parish office at Kirchplatz 9, by calling 033843-51338. Check the latest access information before your visit.

The historic water tower is listed as a protected monument. The exhibition at the soda museum inside the tower features machines for filling and cleaning bottles, closure devices and historic glass bottles. At the farm shop there, you can sample and buy regional specialities; opening arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check before your visit. Niemegk’s outdoor swimming pool is also located at the historic water tower.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes

Nature Park Circular Hiking Trail 44 runs around Niemegk through meadows and pastures in bloom, small groves, and along the Fläming streams Buffbach and Adda. The route offers beautiful views at several points. For wayfinding, it is marked with a red 44 featuring hills on a white square.

Another way to explore the area is the Fieldstone Church Cycling Tour: it runs from Niemegk for 29 kilometres to seven fieldstone churches typical of the Fläming region in the southern nature park. The route has been signposted since 2017. While Circular Hiking Trail 44 focuses on the landscapes around Niemegk, the cycling tour links its route to church destinations and a stated distance.

Niemegk has its own motorway exit on the A9. This provides a point of reference for getting there both by the stated train-and-bus connection and via the motorway.

Potsdam-Mittelmark in a Wider Context

The wider travel destination of Potsdam-Mittelmark also offers other cultural attractions. Above Bad Belzig stands Eisenhardt Castle, a cultural landmark that allows visitors to experience the Middle Ages first-hand. In the Middle Ages, Ziesar Castle was an important episcopal residence; its well-preserved architecture offers insight into the religious and political history of Potsdam-Mittelmark. Wiesenburg Castle is a Renaissance building surrounded by a landscaped park. Reckahn Castle is dedicated to the life and work of Prussian reformer Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow. The permanent exhibition “Reason for the People” has been on display there since 2001.
