Village Churches and Their Architectural History
The village church in Ketzür brings together several historical layers of construction and furnishing. An irregular octagonal structure with an apse dates from the 13th century; in the 15th century, the western section was raised and a tower was added. Most of the furnishings date from the early 17th century and are very well preserved. They include a painted wooden ceiling and wall paintings depicting Christ and the twelve Apostles.
The village church in Gortz is a Late Gothic fieldstone building with brick quoins, built between 1450 and 1500. The altar and pulpit are in the Baroque style; their two twisted columns are decorated with vine leaves and ears of grain. The church also has two bells, both cast in Berlin: Christian Heintze cast one in 1718, and Daniel Heintze cast the other in 1740.
The periods represented differ: Ketzür combines construction phases from the 13th to the 15th century with furnishings from the early 17th century; in Gortz, the Late Gothic building, Baroque features and 18th-century bells come together. This gives you two distinct perspectives on the village churches to choose between.
Circular Hiking Trail Through Three Villages
The Beetzseeheide circular hiking trail connects Butzow, Ketzür and Gortz and passes through the Middle Havel Lowlands Bird Sanctuary. The trail thus links three villages while also offering a connection to the landscape. If hiking is your main interest, you can consider this route as a separate aspect of your trip alongside the individual buildings.
Ketzür Post Mill: Seasonal Tours
During the milling season, from Easter Monday to mid-October, tours of the Ketzür post mill led by the millers are listed on Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m. Before your visit, check whether the tours are taking place that year. The seasonal dates and regular day of the week can help you plan a possible visit to the mill.
In the Wider Potsdam-Mittelmark Destination
The wider Potsdam-Mittelmark destination also offers cultural and historical themes with their own distinct character. Eisenhardt Castle, above Bad Belzig, is a cultural landmark where visitors can experience the Middle Ages first-hand. Ziesar Castle was an important episcopal residence in the Middle Ages; its well-preserved architecture offers insights into the religious and political history of Potsdam-Mittelmark. Wiesenburg Palace is a masterpiece of the Renaissance, surrounded by a landscaped park.
For hiking enthusiasts, the Castle Trail offers another way to experience Potsdam-Mittelmark: it is 148 kilometres long, passes through the entire Hoher Fläming Nature Park and connects the region's four castles. This is a regional-scale route in its own right, alongside the Beetzseeheide circular hiking trail connecting Butzow, Ketzür and Gortz.
