Gollwitz combines historic buildings with cycle routes and the quiet character of a village. When planning your stay, you can focus on different things: the castle and village church, routes along canals and rivers, or observing nature along the circular trail. The village offers a range of local recreation opportunities and is set in an appealing natural landscape.

Estate Park and Waterside Landscape

Gollwitz Estate Park is a protected historic landscape covering around 3.5 hectares. It was probably laid out in the first half of the 18th century. The expansive park is part of the historic ensemble surrounding the castle and, together with the castle and its outbuildings, is of historical, urban-planning and artistic significance.

The Emster Canal also shapes the landscape: northwest of Gollwitz, it flows into the Krumme Havel. This location is a landmark for several of the routes described here. The circular route on the “Krumme Havel & Gutshaus Gollwitz” tour follows the Emster, linking the natural landscape with the historic manor house.

Castle and Village Church

Gollwitz Castle is a former manor house with an adjoining farm building. Its present-day appearance dates from the early 20th century, after a fire destroyed the previous building. Public events are regularly held at the Gollwitz Castle meeting centre, giving local residents the opportunity to visit the castle. If you are planning a visit, check the dates of the events.

Gollwitz Village Church was built from fieldstones in the Middle Ages. It was remodelled in 1750, when its west tower was added. The bell is also part of the building’s history: it was cast in Berlin in 1691. The church and its churchyard wall, a Baroque tombstone and the von Rochow family burial site are all protected as historic monuments. The protected ensemble therefore includes both the church building and the associated features of the churchyard.

Cycle Routes and Circular Trail

The Havel Cycle Route is a 261 km long-distance cycling route. Its most recently completed section is 1.5 km long and was officially opened in Gollwitz for cyclists and inline skaters. This completed the connection to Potsdam-Mittelmark district. The Zauche Cycle Route also starts in Gollwitz, near Brandenburg an der Havel. Its paved section from Gollwitz to Rietz runs along the Emster Canal and offers good conditions for cyclists, roller skaters and inline skaters.

The circular route along the Emster offers a different focus: it passes resting places for greylag geese and cranes. The birds can be observed there, particularly during the annual spring and autumn migrations. This means you can take different interests into account when planning an outing—a longer long-distance cycling route, a paved section between two places, or a circular walk with views of birdlife.

If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can weigh up whether to focus on architectural history, cycling or observing nature when choosing your destination.
