Discover Michendorf
Accommodation in Michendorf
Michendorf is nestled among forests, meadows and lakes on the edge of the Nuthe-Nieplitz Nature Park. Nature, hiking opportunities, cycling tours and local history offer a range of ways to plan your stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Michendorf, consider whether you want to spend your stay mainly exploring the outdoors or also discovering the area’s cultural attractions.
Hiking and Cycling in Michendorf
Michendorf’s location in the Nuthe-Nieplitz-Niederung Nature Park makes the municipality a starting point and destination for longer hikes and cycling tours. One specific cycling option is the “Erlebnis” tour around Michendorf: it starts and finishes in Michendorf and is 38 kilometres long. Its distance gives you a clear point of reference when planning your outing. The “Schlemmer” cycling tour, by contrast, is designed for asparagus season, from April to June. This gives you the choice of a route with a specified distance or a seasonal theme. If you plan to visit specific farms or make use of particular offers, check their availability separately.
Herthasee: No swimming; entering the biotope area is prohibited
Herthasee is not a swimming lake, and swimming is not permitted there. The area maintained as a biotope must not be entered either. Keep both restrictions in mind when planning your day: the lake is not a place for swimming, and the biotope is off limits. These notices clearly distinguish the natural setting from a place where you can swim or enter the biotope.
Local History Museum and Church
The Michendorf Local History Museum is housed in the old mill building on Wolkenberg. Under the motto “In Search of Traces in Michendorf,” several floors display historical photographs, objects and documents from families, crafts, trade, businesses, associations and other sources. The collection thus brings together a range of traces of the area’s history. Michendorf Church offers a different focus: it is a small half-timbered church with its own welcoming character and has been standing since 1743. While the museum gathers historical records from various fields, the church’s half-timbered architecture and long history take centre stage.
More Destinations in the Wider Potsdam-Mittelmark Travel Region
Potsdam-Mittelmark also offers distinctive cultural and historical destinations. Above Bad Belzig stands Eisenhardt Castle, a cultural landmark where visitors can experience the Middle Ages up close. In the Middle Ages, Ziesar Castle was an important episcopal residence and is impressive for its well-preserved architecture. Wiesenburg Palace is a masterpiece of the Renaissance, surrounded by a landscaped park. Reckahn Palace is dedicated to the life and work of the Prussian reformer Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow. The permanent exhibition “Reason for the People” has been on display there since 2001.
The wider Potsdam-Mittelmark travel region also offers a range of themed options for longer tours. The EuroVelo R1 route passes through the region’s landscapes and historic towns. The 148-kilometre Burgenwanderweg (Castle Trail) crosses the entire Hoher Fläming Nature Park and connects the region’s four castles. These routes and destinations are part of the wider Potsdam-Mittelmark travel region; they should not be confused with the attractions in Michendorf itself.
