You can plan a trip to Golm around several themes: the Golmer Luch, historic churches and memorial sites, and campus architecture. If you’re looking for hotels in Golm, these highlights can help you weigh nature, history and transport connections as different aspects of your stay.

Getting there and transport connections

Regional train line RB20 stops in Golm and connects the town with Potsdam-Griebnitzsee, Potsdam Park Sanssouci, Potsdam Hauptbahnhof and destinations in the northern Berlin outskirts. According to VBB, the line runs hourly on weekdays only. Check the timetable in advance if you plan to use this connection on your travel day.

Sanssouci Park is 5 kilometres from Golm and is easily reached on foot or by bicycle via Lindenallee. From Golm, you can also reach Töplitz Island via Mühlendamm and the Wublitz Bridge. These named connections provide different reference points for planning your trip, without requiring you to follow a particular route.

Nature in the Golmer Luch

The Golmer Luch is considered a local recreation and hiking area on the outskirts of town. Its meadows lie within the “Potsdamer Wald- und Havelseengebiet” Landscape Protection Area. Increasing waterlogging has helped a great diversity of species develop in the Luch. Herons, cranes, ravens, nightingales, storks and owls are among the many birds found there.

A popular circular hiking trail starts at the Golm Science Park and takes around 1.5 hours. The Stork Bench at the cemetery entrance offers a dedicated birdwatching spot: from there, you can watch a pair of storks arrive in March and April. Whether you actually see them depends on conditions in any given year.

Churches and memorial sites

The Kaiser-Friedrich Church is a Neo-Gothic brick church that was consecrated on 24 July 1886. It still houses a Gesell organ dating from 1886. Regular concerts and talks are held there alongside Protestant and Romanian Orthodox services. If you plan to attend a concert or talk, check the date in advance.

The Old Village Church of Golm stands on the site of a medieval church first mentioned in a document in 1289; it is considered the oldest building in Potsdam. The two churches represent different historical connections: the Old Village Church centres on its medieval origins, while the Kaiser-Friedrich Church is notable for its 19th-century Neo-Gothic brick architecture.

Another historic memorial site is the Karl Liebknecht Monument. It commemorates the spot where Karl Liebknecht spoke to workers from Golm and Eiche on 31 July 1910 about the struggle against Prussia’s three-class voting system. This adds a specifically dated event from local history to the story of the churches.

Campus architecture

Architectural highlights on the Golm campus include the “Golden Cage” at the Institute of Physics and Astronomy and the “Black Cube” at the university library. Their names and respective connections to the institute and library form a distinct focus alongside the historic sites and natural landscape.
