Rivers, themed trails and historic sites give Essonne many different facets. Those who want to combine nature and culture will find both trails with clearly defined themes and gardens, museums and striking buildings here. When planning, it helps to first choose the experiences you want to shape your stay: a hike, a bike ride, a museum visit or time at a leisure park.

Discover river landscapes and trails

Essonne has 49,000 hectares of natural areas, including 42,000 hectares of forest. More than 400 kilometres of rivers and 2,500 kilometres of trails complement this landscape. The rivers that shape the department’s visitor landscape include the Seine, Juine, Orge, Yerres and Essonne. The Parc naturel régional du Gâtinais français also extends across administrative boundaries: it includes 36 municipalities in Essonne and 33 in Seine-et-Marne.

The Domaine départemental de Montauger showcases a varied ecological landscape across 20 hectares. Orchards, ponds, marshes, slopes, water basins and streams form different habitats there. The diversity of the landscape is also the subject of several trails: the Sentier d’interprétation agricole is 10.3 kilometres long and rated easy. Eight panels explain agricultural topics; an activity booklet for children complements the trail.

The shorter themed alternative is the one-kilometre Sentier de découverte sur la forêt, an interpretive woodland trail. It is accessible to visitors with motor, visual, hearing or intellectual disabilities. The Sentier de découverte sur l’art rupestre runs for 3.5 kilometres and explores rock art from the Palaeolithic to the present day. The three trails therefore differ both in length and focus: agriculture, forest or rock art.

There are also different distances for bike rides. The Circuits des artistes consists of three routes: 54 kilometres for VTC, 55 kilometres for VTT and a shorter 45-kilometre option. The Entre Juine et Renarde route comprises 28 kilometres of marked trails in the Juine Valley. This information helps you choose a ride by distance and theme, without combining the different options into a single route.

Cultural sites and leisure activities

The Domaine départemental de Chamarande is a site with historic monument status and includes a 98-hectare “Jardin remarquable”. In Dourdan, the house museum of the Château de Dourdan is located in an 18th-century salt storehouse. Its collections focus on local history, historic furnishings and the castle. Dourdan and Étampes are considered royal towns in Essonne, adding another historical dimension to a visit.

Another architectural highlight is the Église Saint-Sulpice de Favières: the church is an example of Rayonnant Gothic architecture, with 13th-century stained-glass windows and a 12th-century chapel of miracles. At the Tour de Montlhéry, 138 steps lead to a viewpoint overlooking Montlhéry and the surrounding area. Visitor arrangements may change; check the current options in advance.

For active leisure, the Île de Loisirs d’Étampes offers wave swimming, walking and fitness routes, mini golf, archery, climbing and a toboggan run. Activities and operating conditions may change, so check the latest information before your visit. The Île de Loisirs Le Port aux Cerises in Draveil offers sports and leisure activities all year round; its specific activities and operating conditions may also change.

Plan your arrival and hotel location

Massy has a TGV station with connections to the European rail network. Timetables and train connections may change; check the details for your travel dates. The A6 and A10 motorways cross Essonne, while Orly Airport lies to the north of the department. These are different reference points for planning your journey, not statements about specific travel times to individual attractions.

When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether your trip will be shaped mainly by the themed trails, cultural sites or a leisure activity. Then factor your planned arrival into your choice of location. This way, you can tailor your search to the activities you actually have planned, rather than assuming a particular type of accommodation or travel style.
