Méréville: Gardens, Architecture and Watercress
Accommodation in Méréville
Méréville offers several clearly distinct starting points for planning a trip: a large Anglo-Chinese garden, historic buildings and a watercress-growing tradition along the Juine. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay.
Historic Garden and Buildings
The Domaine départemental de Méréville is a 58-hectare picturesque Anglo-Chinese garden. Its size sets it apart from the individual historic buildings in the town.
La Halle is a 16th-century market hall covering 720 m². Its oak timber frame is supported by four rows of eleven oak pillars each. Its function as a market hall and the precise arrangement of its supporting elements give the building two clearly distinct aspects.
The Tour Trajane was built between 1790 and 1792 based on a drawing by Hubert Robert. The bell tower of the Église Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens is much older: it dates from the Early Gothic period and is dated to 1140–1180. The church’s twelve contemporary stained-glass windows were created by Philippe Cara Costea in 1998. The tower and windows thus represent two different dates for the same church building; together with the Tour Trajane, they offer an architectural comparison spanning the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
The Juine, Watercress and Wetlands
Watercress connects the landscape of Méréville with the Juine: it has been grown along its banks since the 19th century, and its cultivation has helped shape the town’s landscapes over time. Founded in 1897, Villa Paul continues a family tradition of watercress growing. Visitor information published in February 2023 states that its watercress farm is open to the public and notes that Olivier Barberot is happy to welcome visitors. Arrange your visit in advance.
A departmental-level assessment of natural heritage lists wet meadows and ponds at the Domaine départemental. For the Marais de Méréville, it describes a mosaic of wet and aquatic habitats: sedge beds, reed beds, alder-ash forests, willow thickets and spawning grounds. Watercress cultivation along the Juine and the various wetland habitats thus stand alongside one another as distinct water-shaped aspects of the landscape.
Routes and Visits
The Vélorail de la Vallée de la Juine offers a 12-kilometre ride. A ride on the Vélorail between the valley and the forest takes two hours. Check the current operating arrangements before making plans.
The discovery trail “Méréville, the Watercress Capital” runs along the Juine through Méréville’s watercress gardens. Choosing between the two activities therefore directs your attention either to a ride between the valley and the forest or to watercress cultivation along the river. The La Charbonnière circular route starts and ends in Méréville; check local information for possible access changes before your visit.
A guided tour of the town centre includes the Lavoir de Méréville.
