Villeneuve-Sur-Auvers offers both geological and cultural-historical points of interest. Sandstone shapes the village, while buildings and memorial sites represent different aspects of its heritage. When planning your trip, it is therefore important to consider whether you would rather focus on the landscape and outdoor activities or on architectural history and remembrance. The Butte du Puits combines a geological perspective with a marked circular hiking trail, while the church, memorial, and grotto offer other specific historical themes.

Sandstone and the Butte du Puits

The village was built on a sandstone bed approximately 25 metres thick, and sandstone blocks are visible in many places. You encounter sandstone not only as a geological feature, but also as a visible part of the landscape. The Butte du Puits rises above the dry valley of Villeneuve-sur-Auvers and has been part of the “Réserve Naturelle des Sites géologiques de l’Essonne” nature reserve since 2011. At the butte is a quarry face more than eight metres high, formed around 30 million years ago. The bed describes the village’s geological foundation, while the face is a visible rock outcrop: both features show sandstone on different scales.

The Butte du Puits is freely accessible, and visits are regulated and free of charge. There is a car park and a marked circular hiking trail. This means that access, parking, and a walking option are all available for planning your visit. Please follow the rules of the nature reserve during your visit.

Architectural history, remembrance, and historic preservation

The Église Saint Thomas Becket was built in the 15th century and has been listed as a historic monument since 10 February 1948. It preserves a stained-glass window from the 16th century depicting the Virgin Mary with the child. The window dates from the century after the church was built and adds a specific work of art to its architectural history. For a cultural-historical visit, the age of the building is not the only consideration: its religious image also gives the church a distinctive theme.

The Villeneuve-sur-Auvers American Cemetery Memorial offers a different focus on remembrance. It preserves the original cemetery entrance and plaques honouring American and German soldiers, as well as 15 unidentified French soldiers. The site thus combines a preserved feature of the cemetery with tributes to three groups of soldiers; its focus differs from the church’s architectural and artistic history.

The Grotte dite Le Trou du Sarrazin was designated a historic monument by decree on 18 December 1972. The decree dates the designation and provides a specific point of reference for this heritage site.

When choosing your trip, your preferred perspective is therefore the main consideration: the Butte combines geology with a marked circular trail, while the historical themes range from sacred art and remembrance to historic preservation. This lets you choose Villeneuve-Sur-Auvers based on a specific interest.
