Le Val St. Germain can be viewed as a place to stay from three distinct perspectives: the landscape along the Rémarde, its cultural and religious heritage, and specific activities in the village. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can first consider which focus best suits your plans. The river and forests represent the natural setting, the park and church the cultural heritage, while a smartphone discovery trail and riding lessons offer specific activities.

Landscape along the Rémarde

The Rémarde runs through Le Val-Saint-Germain. Its banks and the forests to the north and south of the valley are listed as sensitive natural areas in the Essonne department. The natural setting therefore includes the river and wooded areas on both sides of the valley. When considering the destination, this offers a different focus from a single garden or religious heritage: the emphasis is on the riverbanks, valley and forest. If the landscape is a factor in choosing where to stay, this gives you a specific point of reference.

Park and religious heritage

The protected Parc du château du Marais includes the wooded park and the formal French garden. The park is partially protected as a historic monument. You can therefore consider the park both in terms of its features and its historic protection status. This is a different emphasis from the Rémarde: here, the focus is on a specifically named site, rather than a river and its surrounding valley.

Around a hundred candle stubs of Sainte-Julienne have been preserved in the church and can be viewed there. Historically, the pilgrimage to Sainte-Julienne attracted thousands of pilgrims every year. A description from August 2022 noted that the church remained closed outside services for security reasons; Jean-Paul Vernet of the Art religieux et patrimoine association offered to open it to visitors. A description from August 2022 also mentions a small museum in a side room of the church. It displays ecclesiastical vestments and explains the significance of their colours and patterns. If you plan to visit the church or museum, check current access arrangements in advance.

Activities in the village

The smartphone discovery trail “A la recherche des personnages célèbres du village” leads through the streets of Le Val-Saint-Germain. It explores the connections between local figures, the village and its main buildings. While the park and church are individual cultural sites, the trail brings together village streets, people and monuments in a digital experience. Check before your trip whether the app is currently available.
