Klokočovské skálie shows how nature and culture can shape travel plans in Čadca in different ways: explore geological formations along the distinctive rock face, while museums and historical sites offer insights into the region. Hikers can also find specific landmarks to guide them—from the observation tower on Surovina to a long route that ends in Čadca.

Rock Formations and Trails

Klokočovské skálie is a protected nature reserve where stone spheres can be found. The geological rock outcrop forms a face approximately 300 metres long and 15 to 25 metres high, with spherical weathering. A marked trail leads to the site from Jarošovci; allow about an hour for your visit. Local trail conditions may change, so check them before your visit. Megonky is also known for its stone spheres and is designated as a protected natural monument.

From the observation tower on Surovina, you can see across the Oščadnica Valley and towards Krásno nad Kysucou and Čadca. A blue hiking trail runs right by the tower and continues to Veľká Rača. The Javorníky ridge trail offers a different point of reference: it ends in Čadca and is approximately 64 kilometres long. At the tower, the views and trail route are the focus; on the ridge trail, it is the endpoint and overall distance—useful distinctions when weighing the length and focus of your hiking plans.

Another natural attraction is the Korňanský oil spring. It can be reached by bus; the spring pool is about 300 metres from the road. Check current bus services before setting off. For winter, the Beskydsko-javornícka cross-country skiing trail is a separate option: it is groomed during this season and suitable for tourists and mountain visitors of all ages. Grooming conditions depend on the weather.

Museums and Cultural Heritage

Radoľa Manor is the only surviving Renaissance residence of the minor nobility in the Kysuce region. Its offerings include permanent and temporary exhibitions, lectures and creative workshops. As the programme may change, it is worth checking the current event schedule before your visit.

At the Múzeum kysuckej dediny, visitors can take a train ride along a preserved section of the historic switchback railway. Timetables may vary by season, so check the current schedule in advance. This lets you include a special piece of transport history in your day’s plans without assuming that the museum visit is tied to a fixed departure time.

The Vlastivedné múzeum in Krásno nad Kysucou brings together several themes. Its main attraction is a life-size replica of a female mammoth, based on nearby fossil remains. A natural history exhibition explores the flora and fauna of northwestern Slovakia. The permanent “Otvorený depozitár” includes collection items from archaeology, ethnography and history, as well as domestic life, textile fibre processing, wirecraft, religious art, military history, furniture, notable people of Kysuce and other crafts. The exhibition layout and items on display may change.

The museum selection also includes the “Horelický poklad” exhibition, featuring 250 silver coins, and an exhibition on the history of Čadca and its surroundings. In this historical exhibition, visitors can search online databases for emigrants, their own ancestors and legionaries. Those more interested in modern art can visit Kysucká galéria in Oščadnica, a regional gallery focused on presenting, researching and collecting modern art. Its collection includes works by artists from the Kysuce region and prominent Slovak artists; exhibitions and collections may continue to evolve.

Traditions and Special Occasions

Events also add to the cultural offering. The Jánsky festival tradícií on 22 June 2024 featured a traditional crafts market and creative craft workshops. These details refer to that edition; future programmes may differ. The amateur theatre competition Palárikova Raková takes place annually in Raková. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check its dates.

Živčáková is a Marian pilgrimage site with the Chrám Panny Márie Matky Cirkvi cathedral and springs. Pilgrimages take place annually in spring and autumn; the specific dates may vary. For visitors interested in religious sites, this offers a different reason to travel than the museums, art collections or hiking trails. Plan your visits according to the actual opening hours and event dates of each place.
