Turzovka brings together traditional wire-working crafts, folklore and routes to Živčáková. This gives you a choice of very different themes for your stay: the climb in the Turzovská vrchovina, religious and architectural history, and sports facilities in Turzovka-Závodie. Depending on whether you focus on the mountain, local traditions or sports facilities, different details will be most relevant when planning your trip.

Routes to Živčáková and its location

Turzovka lies in the Kysuca River basin. Two walking trails lead from the town to Živčáková: one begins in Vyšný koniec, the other in Závodie. The ascent from Turzovka or Korňa takes about an hour. There is also an improved access road to Živčáková from Korňa; by car, you can reach parking spaces near the Church of Panny Márie Matky Cirkvi. The approaches are therefore clearly distinct: two walking trails start in Turzovka, while the access road comes from Korňa. Živčáková is part of the Turzovská vrchovina and lies on the boundary of the cadastral areas of Turzovka, Korňa and Vysoká nad Kysucou.

Crafts, churches and folklore

Turzovka is one of the centres of traditional wire-working. In the town centre, the bronze monument “Drotár a džarek” by Miroslav Cipár commemorates this craft. The Roman Catholic Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is another part of the town’s architectural heritage: it dates from 1759 and is listed as a national cultural monument. On Živčáková, the Church of Panny Márie Matky Cirkvi has been part of the pilgrimage site since 2015. It was solemnly consecrated on 4 October. The consecration was attended by bishops from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Ukraine, as well as about 15,000 pilgrims. For a trip focused on cultural history, these themes are clearly distinct: the monument recalls the craft tradition, while the two churches represent a Baroque monument and a pilgrimage site, respectively.

The traditional Beskydské slávnosti festival, held in Turzovka for more than five decades, is part of the town’s folklore profile. Its 53rd edition was described as one of the region’s most important folklore events. For 23 years, the Turzovanka folklore group has preserved the songs and customs of Veľká Turzovka and Kysuce. The festival and the group offer two different perspectives on folklore: a long-running series of events and a group’s work to preserve regional songs and customs.
