Nová Bystrica offers travelers a range of points of interest: the open-air museum focuses on the former culture of Kysuce, while the Church of Riečnica and various natural sites offer their own highlights. You can plan your trip around the specific places that best match your interests. For seasonal rides and visits subject to special conditions, it is advisable to check the relevant dates or arrangements in good time.

The Open-Air Museum and Its Forest Railway

The Múzeum Kysuckej dediny in Nová Bystrica–Vychylovka is a permanent open-air exhibition. It documents and presents the former way of life and culture of the people of Kysuce. Residential and agricultural buildings are part of the collection, alongside technical and religious buildings. The buildings were relocated from several villages in Kysuce. The exhibition therefore presents a range of building types and themes, rather than focusing on just one type of building.

The site includes a narrow-gauge forest railway with reversing loops. It carries visitors through the museum grounds along its 3.6-kilometer route and is also a national cultural monument. Its design, reversing-loop system and route length give the railway a distinctive profile within a museum visit. Those interested in the technical aspects of cultural heritage will find a concrete point of comparison here with the residential, agricultural and religious buildings in the exhibition.

Another ride runs from the open-air museum station to Beskid Saddle. Visitors can travel by historic train or rail bike. This service is seasonal, so check the operating dates before making plans. This makes it possible to distinguish the forest railway route within the museum grounds from this seasonal connection, without assuming that both rides operate on the same schedule.

The Church of Riečnica

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is associated with the former municipality of Riečnica and lies in the area of the Nová Bystrica reservoir. Built in 1905, it is a single-nave Neo-Romanesque church. Following the resettlement of Riečnica, it is the only material evidence of the former village’s existence. It was declared a cultural monument in 1996. Its architectural style, year of construction and significance as evidence of the former village together offer a different perspective on Kysuce’s history from the relocated buildings in the open-air museum.

Special conditions apply to group visits to the church: they can be organized only in exceptional cases and by prior arrangement. If you are considering a group visit, check whether it is possible before your trip. This restriction applies to group visits and should not be confused with the forest railway’s seasonal rides when planning your visit.

Natural Sites and Getting Your Bearings Outdoors

Along the Školský náučný chodník Prírodné spoločenstvá doliny Chmúra school nature trail, information panels introduce four typical ecosystems: water, soil, meadow and coniferous forest. The trail’s focus is on natural habitats. There is also a path at the dam of the Vodná nádrž Nová Bystrica – Vychylovka, with views over part of the reservoir. The view is of part of the body of water, not the entire reservoir.

The Vychylovské prahy natural formation lies along the Vychylovka stream in Nová Bystrica. Here, the characteristic stepped course of a mountain stream can be seen cutting through layers of claystone and sandstone. The rocky section is about 150 meters long and visible from the road; the formation is also a suitable stopping point on the way to the Múzeum Kysuckej dediny Vychylovka. As conditions for stopping along the road may change, check the situation on site if you plan to stop here.

A Route Toward Stará Bystrica

The Okruh Hrebeňom Kysúc circular route starts at a parking lot in Nová Bystrica and heads toward Stará Bystrica via the Kysucká magistrála. If you plan to stop for a meal along the way, information about a traditional inn on the route may also be useful: traditional dishes are served there, and the staff wear Kysuce folk costumes. Check what is on offer in advance if your plans depend on it.

The sites therefore offer different highlights: the open-air museum presents the cultural history of Kysuce through relocated buildings and the forest railway; the church preserves material evidence of the former Riečnica; and the nature trail, reservoir and stream formation draw attention to the landscape and natural environment. These distinctions can help you plan your trip around the topics that interest you most.
