Stará Bystrica combines an exceptional astronomical clock with traces of local history and trails through Kysuce. The Slovenský orloj, church art and the view from Bobovec offer different ways to enjoy your stay: you can explore local architectural and commemorative history or set aside time for a hike.

The Slovenský orloj and its special features

The Slovenský orloj is the first and only orloj in Slovakia. Its astronomical data are tailored to the geographical location of Stará Bystrica. The clock is also unusual in the way it displays the time: it is the only orloj in the world to show what is known as true solar time. So it is worth looking not only at the visible dial, but also at the mechanism behind it.

Visitors can see the mechanisms and astrolabe up close in the machine room. As access arrangements may change, it is advisable to check visiting options before your visit. This lets you plan the orloj either as a notable destination in its own right or as part of a visit that takes in other aspects of the town’s cultural history.

Church, cross and chapel

The Church of St. Michael the Archangel was built in 1892 in the Neo-Gothic style and is one of the most important landmarks of the municipality and parish. A stone cross stands by the church, made in 1834 by master craftsman Jozef Kuric, who was born in Stará Bystrica. It remains in its original location and is considered a testament to regional history. One particularly striking artistic detail is the halo behind Christ’s head: it is made of 23.5-karat gold leaf.

The roadside chapel in Lány also has its own architectural history. The Baroque-Classical chapel was built at the end of the 18th century and extensively reconstructed in 1822. Its decorative features include folk wood carvings from the early 19th century, including depictions of Ecce Homo and the Pietà. The period when the carvings were made and the later reconstruction of the chapel are two distinct chapters in its history.

Jewish heritage and remembrance

The Jewish cemetery was established by the Jewish community in the 18th century. A symbolic memorial commemorates different groups: the names of the deceased are listed on one side, and the names of the Jewish residents of Stará Bystrica who were deported are listed on the other. Restoration focused on preserving the gravestones that remained; their original orientation was retained. The cemetery, memorial and gravestones each offer a different perspective on local Jewish history and its remembrance.

On foot to Bobovec or along the nature trail

For a shorter hike, an easy, yellow-marked trail leads from the Slovenský orloj at Rínek sv. Michala to the observation tower on Bobovec. The route is 2 km long and takes about an hour to walk. The tower is 16 m high, has stood on the cadastral boundary between Stará Bystrica and Radôstka since 2011, and offers views of the Malá Fatra, Martinské Hole, Veľká Rača and Lysá Hora in the Czech Republic.

A much longer option is the cross-border Beskydská zelená cesta. This self-guided educational trail for pedestrians and cyclists starts in the Slezákovci settlement in the municipality of Stará Bystrica. The 32.6 km route has 30 stations and a stated walking time of 16 hours. It can be used in summer and winter. The difference in time required is clear: the route to Bobovec is listed as taking about an hour, while the Beskydská zelená cesta takes 16 hours. Along the Kysucká cyklomagistrála, the educational trail also has two rest areas in Stará Bystrica.

Cycling connections and an event

A short connecting route runs from the center of Stará Bystrica to the Kysucká cyklomagistrála. It starts at the square, passes through the municipality and ends at a cycle path. As route conditions may change, it is a good idea to check them before planning a bike ride. The Cyklotrasa hrebeňom Kysúc cycle route runs along the Kysucká cyklomagistrála towards Stará Bystrica; the Slovenský orloj and the reconstructed town square are optional detours.

The event calendar may also be relevant when planning your trip: traditional celebrations of Sovereignty Day have been associated with Stará Bystrica in the Kysuce region for years. This local event developed into a nationwide one. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the dates; the annual program may vary.
