Skalite offers two distinct points of interest to consider when planning your stay: cycling and architectural history. The “8473 – Nad Skalitým” cycling route runs above the municipality, while the preserved church and other historic buildings add a cultural dimension. If you are looking for a hotel in Skalite, you can first consider whether your travel plans are driven more by a cycling tour or by an interest in cultural history. The route details and historical dates offer different points of reference.

Cycling in Skalite

The “8473 – Nad Skalitým” cycling route begins at the Polish border in the Mýto area, at a junction with a blue cycle tourism route. A municipal description from 2018 gives its length as 6.3 kilometres, elevation figures of 178 m/341 m, and difficulty level REKREA. The surface is listed as asphalt as well as forest and field tracks. The route offers beautiful views above the municipality.

The mix of asphalt, forest and field tracks means the route does not have the same surface throughout. Along with its length, the surfaces and stated elevation figures are therefore useful points of reference when planning your ride. The route description dates from 2018; as conditions can change, check the current route and its condition before setting off.

This route is distinct from the 60-kilometre Kysuce main cycling trail. It passes through Čadca, Skalité, Oščadnica, Krásno nad Kysucou, Stará Bystrica and Vychylovka. The 6.3 kilometres of the “8473 – Nad Skalitým” route are therefore set against a much longer overall trail. While the shorter route above the municipality is described by its difficulty level and surfaces, the main cycling trail is characterised by its total length and the sequence of places it passes through.

This is a practical distinction when choosing a hotel: you can consider whether a shorter cycling tour or the longer route through several places should be the focus of your trip. The places named give an idea of the larger geographical sequence of the main cycling trail; the specific details on length, elevation and surface refer to “8473 – Nad Skalitým”.

Building history and historic buildings

The masonry church of Kostol sv. Jána Krstiteľa has been preserved to this day. Construction began around 1787. An old document found during the restoration of the tower records its completion in 1793. The church can therefore be placed in time using an approximate start date and a specific year of completion.

The chapel Kaplnka Povýšenia sv. kríža is located in Skalité-Kudlov; the cross in front of the chapel dates from 1835. Kalvária Sedembolestnej Panny Márie was completed in August 1941.

The historical dates thus span the church’s building history in the late 18th century, the cross from 1835, and the completion of Kalvária in 1941. They offer different points of reference in time if you would like to include Skalite’s architectural history in your travel plans alongside cycling.
