Makov: Landscape, Trails and History
Accommodation in Makov
Makov is characterized by hilly to mountainous terrain. Nature, cycling and hiking routes, seasonal skiing, and local history offer different focuses for a stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Makov, your planned activities can be a good starting point for choosing when to travel.
Landscape and Nature in Makov
Makov is part of the CHKO Kysuce Protected Landscape Area because of its preserved natural forest stands and its landscape and aesthetic values. At 1,070 m, Veľký Javorník is Makov’s highest point. The Veľký Javorník National Nature Reserve is located in Makov’s cadastral area in the Javorníky Mountains at 1,071 m. The elm tree U Papaji is another notable natural landmark: it is considered Central Europe’s oldest and largest field elm and is almost 500 years old.
These facts show different scales: protected forest stands and landscape values on the one hand, and a single old tree on the other; Veľký Javorník adds a clearly identified high point to the description of nature.
Cycling, Hiking and Winter Sports
For MTB, the Makov Centrum–Bumbálka route is a green route covering 9 km with an elevation gain of 450 m. The “Ku prameňu Kysuce” nature trail is an easy hike, though it features a steeper ascent; it is 3 km long, with a total ascent of 194 m. The two routes differ in activity and length: the cycling route is designated for MTB, while the nature trail is shorter. When assessing this hike, it is worth considering both details together: its easy rating comes alongside the steeper ascent, and the 194 m total ascent complements the trail length. The trail’s condition and signage may change; check local conditions before your hike.
The source of the Kysuca River is not accessible to visitors. Nevertheless, check this access restriction locally before including the site in your plans.
Ski Makov’s seasonal offerings include ski and snowboard rental, ski servicing, and a ski school and children’s ski kindergarten for beginners. The five easy to intermediate downhill runs are at elevations of 660 to 948 m and have a combined length of 6,000 m. Seasonal availability and operating conditions may change; before your trip, check which slopes and services will be available on your dates.
Church and Local History
The neoclassical “Kostol sv. Petra a Pavla” church was built in 1803. The “PORAZISKO” information board in Makov covers local history in connection with the largest anti-Habsburg uprising in the former Kingdom of Hungary, as well as the burial of fallen Kuruc soldiers at this site. The condition of the board should be checked locally. While the church provides an architectural point of interest, the board focuses on a historical context and the burial at this site.
When choosing your priorities, nature-related features—the protected landscape, nature reserve, and elm tree—can be contrasted with historical points of interest: the neoclassical church building and the memorial board. This can help you shape your trip around either the landscape or local history.
Getting to Melocík
Melocík can be reached by bus from Makov–Ústredie or from Bytča bus station. Bus information may change; check the connection before traveling.
