The UNESCO Global Geopark Buzău Land lies in the Carpathian arc and reveals around 40 million years of geological development. In Buzau, these landscapes sit alongside museums, sculptures and historic sites. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can first consider whether geology, cultural history or a mix of the two will shape your visit. The region offers a wide range of places to start exploring.

Geological formations and trails

The mud volcanoes extend across the communes of Berca and Scorțoasa. Badlands and volcanic cones shape a landscape where cold black mud rises to the surface. Access is via the DN 10 from Buzău towards Brașov as far as Sătuc in the commune of Berca; from there, it is another 20 kilometres. Check road conditions before setting out.

The Trovanți of Bozioru also reveal geological processes in a different form: in the Bălănesei Valley, they consist of sand deposits and layers of cemented sandstone. They are about one kilometre from the village of Ulmet. From the car park near the Trovanți, visitors walk about 500 metres, then follow a stepped path through an alder grove to the “Babele de la Ulmet”. As trail conditions can change, check the path’s current state before your visit. In Bozioru, the Muzeul Formelor, opened in 2018, uses augmented reality to explain how the Trovanți formed. Here, you can encounter the geological phenomenon and its digital interpretation in two different forms.

Museums, collections and art

The Muzeul de Arheologie, Istorie și Artă Buzău is housed in the former girls’ school building, which is classified as a historic monument. Its permanent exhibitions opened in 1980–1981 and were subsequently updated several times, including in 1986, 1990, 1999–2001, 2004 and 2015–2017. The telephone collection at the Muzeul Județean Buzău offers a distinct perspective on the history of technology. It comprises more than 300 Romanian and foreign telephones and presents the history of the telephone chronologically. It includes an Ericsson telephone dating from 1898.

The Măgura Sculpture Camp comprises 256 sculpture groups and statues by 153 Romanian sculptors. This open-air collection is set in clearings near Ciolanu Monastery, in the commune of Tisău. The Bucur and Margareta Chiriac collection offers a different perspective on art and tradition: contemporary Romanian art sits alongside folk art objects such as ceramics, wooden cutlery, masks, decorated eggs and carved chairs.

In Valea Salciei, the “Casa Timpului” visitor collection is housed in a farmhouse. Its three rooms comprise a living room, an old bedroom and a room with traditional tools. The “Timpul Omului” ethnographic collection in Mânzălești uses stone, clay and salt to symbolically interpret local life. Both collections invite visitors to explore different forms of everyday life and how it is represented.

Architecture, literature and regional routes

The Biserica Dintr-o Piatră in Năeni was built entirely from white Năeni limestone. The iconostasis, altar, surrounding walls and interior furnishings are also carved from stone. Visits are possible on Saturdays, Sundays and religious holidays; check visiting arrangements before your trip. The prehistoric caves of Năeni are more than 4,000 years old.

Literature enthusiasts will find the Casa Memorială “Vasile Voiculescu” in Pârscov. It recreates the writer’s family surroundings and presents aspects of his private and professional life in a themed exhibition. In Râmnicu Sărat, the Brâncovenesc Ensemble, with its rich stone decoration, is one of the defining monuments of the Brâncovenesc architectural style. The exhibition about Dumitru Dan’s collection documents a round-the-world journey that Dumitru Dan and three companions began on 1 April 1910.

If you would like to bring together a variety of cultural themes in a single itinerary, “Drumul pietrei și al cramelor din județul Buzău” combines history, archaeology, religion and local traditions with viticulture and winemaking. The participating locations may change; check which stops are currently included before your trip. The proposed tourist route through the Nișcov Valley follows county road 100H through Vernești, Nișcov, Cârlomănești, Mierea, Grăjdana, Izvoranu, Leiculești, Haleș and Tisău. It can end at the “Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul” monument in Măgura. Check road conditions before setting out.

Activities on the Buzău River

Clubs and specialist instructors offer rafting and kayaking. The moderately challenging route begins at the Nehoiașu hydroelectric power station near the confluence of the Bâsca and Buzău rivers, heads towards Nehoiu and reaches the Valea Lupului area in the town of Pătârlagele. Rapids and calm stretches alternate; the trip can take three to four hours, including the briefing. Water conditions vary by season. Check current availability and river conditions before booking.
