Discover Chiojdu: Routes and Cultural History
Accommodation in Chiojdu
Marked trails to the Trovanții and the architectural history of Casa cu Blazoane are among the themes to explore during a stay in Chiojdu. The different route details are especially useful for planning: they specify starting points, durations and, for one trail, an approximate elevation gain.
Marked trails to the Trovanții
A marked trail leads from the village of Bâsca Chiojdului to the Trovanții din Chiojdu; first, it crosses a metal bridge over the Bâsca River. The trail takes 60 to 90 minutes and is easy to moderate. Markings and trail conditions may change, so check both before setting out.
The BA hiking trail connects the village of Chiojdu with the Trovanţii De Chiojdu and climbs the western slope of the hill of Chiojdu. It has an elevation gain of about 300 m and takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Markings and conditions on this trail may also change; check them before setting out.
Both estimated times are in a similar range. The routes, however, differ considerably: the first includes the metal bridge over the Bâsca, while the BA hiking trail climbs the western slope and has the stated elevation gain.
History and architecture
Casa cu Blazoane is a historic monument of national importance; its registration code is BZ-II-m-A-02383. The Izbășoi, free peasants who owned extensive land, built the house in the mid-18th century. It was extended in 1823. Its protected status and architectural history thus provide two specific points of reference for understanding the house.
At Casa Codescu, the focus is on its construction: the solid foundation of river-stone masonry houses the cellar and a room for tools. A replica of Casa Codescu was built in 1936 at the „Dimitrie Gusti“ Village Museum in Bucharest. By contrast, the focus for Casa cu Blazoane is on its development over time and its monument status.
Forest reserve and routes
Pădurea cu tisă lies at the foot of the Munții Monteoru mountains. It is a protected forest-type nature reserve, adding a landscape theme to trip planning alongside the trails and architectural history.
The Casa cu Blazoane–Lacul Vulturilor route is 29 km long and runs exclusively along communal roads or forest roads. The Casa cu Blazoane–Tabla Buții route connects the Munții Siriu and Munții Ciucaș mountain ranges. The two routes are described differently: the first specifies its length and surface, while the second specifies the connection between the mountain ranges. Before planning the 29-km route, check seasonal and current surface conditions.
Getting to Chiojdu
To get to Chiojdu from Gura Bâscei, first take the DN 10, then the DJ 102B towards Calvini, and continue on the DJ 102L towards Cătina and Chiojdu. Roadworks or closures may temporarily change the route, so check it shortly before travelling.
