Buzău: Discover Culture and History
Accommodation in Buzău
When looking for a hotel in Buzău, you can choose the focus of your trip based on the subjects that interest you most: architectural history, folk art, technology, or the historic Crâng. The city brings together a variety of points of interest, from buildings with distinctive stylistic features to museum collections and a park with a long history of use.
Architectural History in the City Centre
Casa Vergu-Mănăilă is a preserved 18th-century feudal building; it was mentioned in documents in 1794. The building combines an old vernacular architectural style with the Brâncovenesc style. Since 1976, it has housed the Ethnography and Folk Art Collection, a department of the Buzău County Museum. Here, a historic building and a collection of ethnographic and folk-art heritage come together.
The Biserica „Buna Vestire” – Banu also offers a distinctive glimpse into architectural history: it is the oldest brick-built church in Buzău County and dates from the 16th century. Its exterior architecture displays a pronounced Brâncovenesc influence. At Casa Vergu-Mănăilă, this style is combined with older vernacular architecture; at Banu Church, it shapes the exterior design. This comparison highlights a shared architectural motif in two different buildings.
The historic centre connects the old bazaar building and the former Obor area on Alexandru Marghiloman Street with the Palatul Comunal. The latter is considered an emblematic building in Buzău and is distinguished by an eclectic blend of architectural styles. The architectural ensemble of Cuza Vodă Street is also included on the List of Historic Monuments. These buildings show how the city's architectural history is expressed in different ways through individual buildings and ensembles.
Museums, Churches, and Collections
The restored and adapted Old Seminary „Chesarie Episcopul” houses the Diocesan Church Museum, with an extensive exhibition of old church art. The building is included on the List of Historic Monuments under code BZ-II-m-A-02324.04. Another church to visit is the Voivodal Cathedral „Adormirea Maicii Domnului”, the old episcopal cathedral, founded by Matei Basarab in 1649. Its interior was painted in fresco in the neoclassical style; in 2011, a silver reliquary containing portions of the relics of eight saints was placed there. Biserica Sfinții Îngeri has a valuable collection of icons and old church books.
The historical exhibition „Buzăul – oraș deschis de istorie” tells the city's history through 24 panels with explanations in Romanian and English. The exhibition „Ocolul lumii pe jos. Povestea celor 497 perechi de opinci” at the Buzău County Museum offers a different cultural focus: it presents heritage connected with Romanian globetrotter Dumitru Dan. On display are 497 pairs of opinci, made by folk-art craftswoman Doina Mușat. Interactive storytelling lessons titled „Călătorie pe glob” and craft workshops titled „Semne tradiționale cusute” are held regularly at the exhibition.
The telephone collection at the Buzău County Museum offers a technical perspective. It comprises more than 300 telephones of Romanian and foreign origin, including devices from Germany, France, Belgium, and the USSR. The chronological display illustrates both the history of the telephone and the role this invention has played in people's lives. All the items have been restored using original components and are in working order.
Crâng as a Historic Promenade
Crâng is also part of Buzău's cultural character. Crâng Forest Park covers 187.18 hectares and includes the 9.4-hectare Crâng Park surrounding the lake. The figures therefore refer to two areas: the Forest Park as a whole and the park by the lake within it. Crâng Park is included on the List of Historic Monuments under code BZ-III-s-B-02500. The site also has a long history of use: since 1828, the people of Buzău have used Crâng as a promenade. This makes it possible to understand the park not only in terms of its area, but also through its historic role in city life.
