Accommodation in Sarata-Monteoru
Sarata-Monteoru is a spa resort shaped by its mineral water, saltwater pools and long history as a spa destination. Marked hiking trails, archaeological sites and historic buildings add to the character of the town. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether spa facilities and history, cultural sites or outdoor activities are your priority when planning your stay.
Marked trails and different destinations
The Traseul 1 – Triunghi Roșu trail starts at the tourist information point and passes along the Sărata riverbed, Casa de Apă and Stânca lui Monu before reaching Lacul Verde. It takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Traseul 2 – Bulina Roșie also starts at the tourist information point and runs past the entrance to the forest road and Cazanul Mare to Mina de Petrol; it takes about 2 hours. Both trails are marked. The approximate times provide an initial indication of the length of each route, while the named waypoints distinguish their destinations.
Mina de Petrol is a historic monument and is considered a rare example of oil extraction using mining methods in Europe and worldwide. However, please note when planning your visit: although Traseul 2 leads to the mine, public access to the active site is not permitted for safety reasons. Check the latest notice before travelling, as its operating status may change.
Church, archaeological site and spa history
The “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” Church in Sarata-Monteoru was built in 1876 by Grigore C. Monteoru, the founder of the spa resort. This date places the church in the early history of the town. Another historic site is Vila Monteoru, built in 1888 and set in an English-style park, now known as a dendrological park.
The La Cetățuie archaeological site lies on Cetățuia Hill in the eastern part of the town. The Bronze Age Monteoru culture was discovered there. The first saltwater pools of the future spa resort were created between 1888 and 1895. Behind Izvorul nr. 6, the ruins of Vechile bazine are located nearby. They have the status of a historic monument and were used as an open-air treatment facility. In Sarata-Monteoru, you can therefore encounter both early traces of the spa resort and evidence of the area’s older history.
Mineral water and bathing facilities
Sarata-Monteoru is known for salty, iodine-rich, bromine-rich, magnesium-rich, sulfur-rich and calcium-rich mineral waters, as well as mineral sediment mud from natural sulfur springs. The mineral waters and mud are recommended for the treatment of musculoskeletal, gynecological, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary conditions.
Ștrandul Paradis is located in the centre. It is considered the oldest and largest bathing facility in the spa resort and has therapeutic saltwater pools. As operating conditions may change, check them before visiting. Izvorul nr. 6 is also in the town centre and offers mineral water for internal use. The ruins of Vechile bazine lie behind the spring; their former use as an open-air treatment facility should be distinguished from today’s bathing facilities.
