In Ciuta, history, road directions and landscape come together at clearly identifiable landmarks. The Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul monument, the church and the shape of the valley offer three distinct perspectives on the place: remembrance, sacred architecture and landforms. When planning your stay, these aspects can help you choose how to explore Ciuta based on your interests.

Monument and Local History

The Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul stands in Ciuta at the junction of DJ 203G and DN10 Buzău–Brașov. It is located at a viewpoint with sweeping views over the Buzău Valley and commemorates the 375th anniversary of Mihai Viteazul’s passage through the valley towards Transylvania. The monument is about 15 metres long, made of concrete and clad in shell limestone. Its location, commemorative purpose and design give the site a clear historical and landscape connection.

The church “Intrarea în Biserică a Maicii Domnului” also offers a tangible historical landmark. It was endowed or built on 2 August 1762. In Ciuta’s cemetery, in front of the church “Intrarea Maicii Domnului în Biserică,” stands a cross-shaped monument featuring a statue of a contemplative soldier. The church and cemetery complement the road-based orientation with sacred architecture and a distinctive sculptural motif.

Valley, Elevation and Routes

Above Ciuta rises the summit of Cetățuia on Dealul Ciolanu, at an elevation of 631.7 metres. Near Ciuta, the Buzău Valley, or Buzău River, depression corridor begins as a gorge-like valley narrowing, 300 to 500 metres wide. The sweeping view over the Buzău Valley from the Fântâna offers a different perspective from the measurements of the narrowing: it describes the field of view, while the width figure describes the shape of the corridor near Ciuta.

The road and route connections can also be distinguished. The route follows DJ 203G from Haleș towards Ciuta, up to the junction with DN10 Buzău–Brașov. The tourist route through Valea Nișcovului leads to Fântâna lui Mihai Viteazul in Ciuta. On the tourist wine route Drumul turistic al Cramelor, the Fântâna is one endpoint; the other is in Pietroasele. The routes therefore share the same endpoint in Ciuta but differ in their onward directions. As road layouts can change because of construction work, check the current route before setting out.

Stonecraft and Regional Connections

Sculptor Vasile Ștefănoiu, who was born in Ciuta, grew up among stoneworkers who supported the artists of the Măgura sculpture workshop. The connection between the place and the material is also evident in the sculptures at the Măgura Open-Air Museum: they were made using stone from the Ciuta–Măgura quarry area. The museum is administratively located in Tisău. In the commune of Măgura, stonemasonry and pottery were among the residents’ crafts, alongside farming. These regional connections add the history of craftsmanship and the use of stone to Ștefănoiu’s biography.
