Routes and landscapes around Cislău

There are twelve tourist routes in the Cislău area. The surroundings are shaped by waterways, hills, lakes and forests: coniferous forests, as well as deciduous ones, form part of the landscape. If you take nature and routes into account when planning your trip, you can consider them alongside the local cultural sites. Check trail conditions and markings before setting out.

Churches and monastic history

In 1588, Doamna Neaga had a monastery built in a clearing near the village of Buda-Crăciunești. Several marked tourist routes lead from Cislău to the ruins of the Doamnei Neaga Monastery. For a specific route description, the 2021–2027 municipal development strategy lists a route from Vf. Seciu via “Valea Zidului” to the ruins. Check that the markings are up to date before setting out.

In Cislău, at 46 Strada Culturii, stands the “Nașterea Maicii Domnului” church complex, dated to 1749. Another historic church stands in Buda-Crăciunești: the clay-plastered wooden “Înălțarea Domnului” church was built in 1791 and, together with its bell tower, is a historic monument. Since 1936, the remains of Doamna Neaga, wife of Prince Mihnea Turcitul, have rested there. Her name is thus associated with both the 1588 monastery foundation and the church in Buda-Crăciunești.

Stud farm and events

Cislău Stud Farm was founded in 1884 on the former lands of Mitocul Călugăresc. Today, it breeds and promotes Thoroughbred and Gidran horses. The composition of the herd may change. When considering the stud farm, it is worth distinguishing its historic founding from its current breeding role.

The 2021–2027 municipal development strategy lists the Christmas carol festival and the “Colindele Cislăului” competition for December 22. According to the strategy, Cislău municipality and local council have organized the event since 2005. For the “Legendele Cislăului” folklore festival, the strategy gives the first Saturday in September as the usual date; it lists the local authorities, together with Buzău County Council and the Buzău County Center for Culture and Art, as organizers. Check the date of the relevant edition before your trip.

Plan your journey

Cislău municipality is accessible by the Buzău–Nehoiașu railway line. As timetables can change, check the service for your travel date. The winding stretch of the Trans Cislau runs between Buda-Crăciunești and Cislău. It was described after renovation work in 2021; check current road conditions before including this stretch in your plans.
