Lake Balta Albă lies in the Râmnic Plain. It is a fluvial liman: alluvial deposits dammed an old riverbed of the Râmnic at its confluence with the Buzău.

Lake and Nature Reserve

The lake is brackish, shallow and eutrophic; eutrophic means nutrient-rich. As a salt lake, it reaches a maximum depth of four metres and does not freeze over in winter. The Balta Albă Nature Reserve covers 1,167 hectares and is of geological and zoological importance. It includes the natural salt lake as well as surrounding peatlands and meadows. The maximum depth refers to the lake, while the area of 1,167 hectares refers to the nature reserve. The lake contains nutrient-rich organic therapeutic mud. The use of sapropelic mud at Lake Balta Albă dates back at least to 1840.

Birdlife and Seasons

The ROSPA0004 Balta Albă-Amara-Jirlău bird protection area is an important feeding and resting ground for Red-breasted Geese (Branta ruficollis) during their winter migration. The area is also important for breeding populations of Eurasian Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) and Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca). In the Balta Albă–Amara–Jirlău area, waterbirds are important breeding and resting birds; at least 20,000 pass through regularly. The area is also classified as a globally important area for biodiversity. The seasonal highlights differ: Red-breasted Geese are associated with winter migration, while the other three species are associated with breeding populations.

The Historic Spa Heritage

Dumitru Seceleanu laid the foundations for the Balta Albă spa resort. The first hotel at the resort was built in 1872; warm and cold baths opened shortly afterwards. Research by Carol Davila confirmed the therapeutic properties of the local healing mud. Together, these milestones show how closely the resort’s history is connected with treatment facilities, baths and hotel construction.

Balta Albă in Literature

Balta Albă is also connected with Vasile Alecsandri in literature: the place inspired his novella “Balta Albă,” published in 1848 in the magazine “Calendarul Albinei.” Thus, the same name appears both in the landscape and as the title of a literary work.

Getting Your Bearings on the DN22

The commune of Balta Albă is crossed by the DN22 national road, which connects Râmnicu Sărat with Brăila. The lake itself lies in the Râmnic Plain, immediately south of this main road. The two relationships can be distinguished for orientation: the road connection concerns the commune, while the location south of the DN22 concerns the lake. A 2023 travel guide locates the Balta Albă tourist rest area directly on the lakeshore along the DN22 between Râmnicu Sărat and Brăila. It lists recreational areas, restaurants and various accommodation options. Before visiting, check which of these facilities are currently available.
