Balta Albă brings together the history of a spa resort, a lake, a protected area and historical remains. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: spa history, nature by the lake or cultural heritage.

Spa History and Literary Connections

The Balta Albă spa resort was founded in 1838 and has been known as a spa resort since the mid-19th century. The history of treatment with sapropelic mud from the lake dates back at least to 1840. Vasile Alecsandri first visited Balta Albă in 1846 and returned in 1847. Alexandru Odobescu later devoted vivid passages to the place in his work “Pseudokineghetikos,” also known as “Fals tratat de vânătoare,” published in 1874. Visitor information dated September 28, 2023, noted that the tourist offer did not include a treatment facility. If you plan to visit specifically for treatment, check the current situation before booking.

Lake and Natural Areas

Lake Balta Albă lies in the Râmnic Plain, immediately south of the road between Râmnicu Sărat and Brăila. Visitor information dated September 28, 2023, locates the Balta Albă tourist rest area on DN 22, between the two cities, directly on the lakeshore. The Balta Albă nature reserve is a geological and zoological protected area covering 1,167 hectares, on the eastern edge of Buzău County and the northwestern edge of Brăila County. Historical scientific observations describe the lake as brackish, shallow, dimictic and eutrophic. They also mention peloid mud, rich in organic components and classified as therapeutic.

A report by ANANP Territorial Buzău for 2023–2024 describes the ROSPA0004 Balta Albă-Amara-Jirlău bird protection area as an important feeding and resting area for Red-breasted Geese (Branta ruficollis) during winter migration. It also highlights the area’s importance for breeding populations of Eurasian Bittern (Botaurus stellaris), Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) and Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca). Thus, two distinct ecological roles coexist: winter stopover habitat for Red-breasted Geese and the area’s importance for the breeding populations of the three other species.

Church and Archaeological Site

The parish church of Balta Albă has a trefoil-shaped floor plan with two side apses and an octagonal tower. Its iconostasis was made in the workshops of Plumbuita Monastery and installed on August 18, 1990. The archaeological site lies 3.1 km west of the village, on the elevated lakeshore terrace. It comprises a settlement and a necropolis dating from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD.

The different periods are clearly distinct: the settlement and necropolis date to antiquity, while the spa history and literary connections belong to the 19th century. The iconostasis adds another layer to this picture, having been installed in 1990. Balta Albă therefore offers different points of interest to consider when planning your trip, from the history of the spa resort to natural and cultural heritage.
