Tisău Commune encompasses numerous valleys covered in forest; at 737 metres, Poiana Hoților is the commune’s highest peak. Other highlights include Barbu Monastery, the former Bradu Monastery complex, the Tisău Cultural Centre and motocross enduro in Izvoranu. This gives you different themes to consider when planning your trip: cultural heritage, landscape and motorsport.

Getting around and road connections

The main access road to Tisău is county road DJ100H. It connects Tisău eastwards with Vernești, where it ends at DN10. The main route through the Nișcov Valley also follows DJ100H through Tisău. DJ203G runs north from Haleș and Izvoru towards Ciolanu Monastery and partly follows the same route as DJ100H there. You can take both the eastern connection towards Vernești and DN10 and the northern route towards Ciolanu Monastery into account when finding your way around.

Landscape in the Nișcov Valley

In the wider regional surroundings of the Nișcov Valley, the landscape is shaped by wooded hills, meadows, vineyards and limestone slopes containing shell rock. The waters of the Nișcov and its tributaries have shaped the area. Together with the commune’s forested valleys, this creates a landscape with both local and broader regional features.

Monastic and cultural history

Barbu Monastery is located in the village of Leiculești. Captain Barbu Bădeanu founded it between 1664 and 1669. The monastery includes a church listed as a historic monument and dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. Its founding period, monument status and dedication provide three specific points of reference for understanding the site’s history.

The former Bradu Monastery complex is located in the village of Haleș. It comprises an enclosure wall, ruined ancillary buildings and a church. The first documentary mention dates from 15 January 1600. This date marks the first mention, not the foundation. Bradu and Barbu therefore have different historical points of reference: an early mention in the former’s case, and a founding period spanning several years in the latter’s.

The Tisău Cultural Centre is located in the village of Valea Sălciilor. It preserves and carries forward the memory of rural life in Buzău County. If you are interested in regional everyday culture as well as the monasteries, this is another point of interest to include in your trip.

The Poiana Pinului recreation centre is located in Haleș, in Tisău Commune, at the foot of Ciolanu Hill. Its facilities include a sports field. Poiana Pinului is accessible by public transport via DN10 and DJ100H. If you plan to use this option for your journey, check the relevant connections and travel times in advance.

Motocross enduro in Izvoranu

An annual motocross enduro event takes place in the village of Izvoranu. This is distinct from a specific event in the past: on 2 November 2024, Izvoranu Racing Park hosted the final round of the 2024 Romanian National Endurocross Championship. If you are planning a trip around the event, check the dates in advance.

The approved motocross enduro track near Izvoranu is 2,000 metres long. As access arrangements may change, check them before setting off.
