Cozieni appeals to travelers interested in geological features and historic places. Specific highlights include several trovant sites, a viewpoint, a Neolithic settlement, and churches each associated with their own location and period.

Geology and Landscape

The Sferele de la Cozieni are located near the Bârza forest. At the upper end of this forest is Vârful Zăpodia, which offers panoramic views of the Buzău Valley. The two places highlight different aspects of the landscape: at the Sferele, the forest setting is the main point of interest; at Vârful Zăpodia, it is the view over the valley. If you choose nature destinations based on their specific features, the forest surroundings and the panorama stand out here as distinct attractions.

The Trovants of Fața lui Nan are located along a spring-fed stream in the village of Fata lui Nan. In Cocârceni, the trovants are smaller formations and are considered spectacular; the Trovants of Punga are associated with the legend of Dochia. On the ridge of Colțeni, a natural stone wall contains fossilized shell fossils. The geological highlights thus include both formations in different places and a connection to fossils.

Archaeology and Historic Places

The area’s cultural history is also tied to a specific place: the Bălănești–Pe poduri settlement belongs to the Neolithic Gumelnița culture. It is located in the administrative unit of Cozieni, in the village of Bălănești. This links Neolithic history to a named settlement site.

The churches can be distinguished by their respective locations and periods. The wooden church “Sfinții Voievozi” in Bălănești is associated with the year 1839. In Cocârceni is the Church of Saint Martyr Theodore Tiron, associated with the year 1819 and considered a church built of masonry and wood. In Cozieni, the church “Adormirea Maicii Domnului” is associated with the period 1903–1913. Another church of the same name is at the former site of Mărculești, which is now incorporated into Bălănești; it is associated with the year 1834. The dates range from 1819 to the period 1903–1913, with 1834 and 1839 in between.

A 2024 report describes Virgil Bâgiu’s collection in the hamlet of Teișu in the commune of Cozieni. It comprises hundreds of objects that were once useful to the collector’s ancestors. The collection thus complements the archaeological and ecclesiastical themes with a personal connection to the collector’s history.

Cozieni in the Geopark

Cozieni is one of the 18 communes in the UNESCO Geopark Ținutul Buzăului. This also places the commune in a regional context: Cozieni is a destination in its own right and part of the geopark. For planning your trip, local places of interest and a wider regional framework are therefore both relevant.
