At the Roman gold-mining complex of Roșia Montană, the various tunnels add up to a total of seven kilometres. Here, the focus is on both mining and the historical imprint it left on the landscape. The Tăuri of Roșia Montană are artificial lakes created for gold mining. The Cheile Râmețului gorge lies in the Trascău Mountains, between steep limestone walls shaped by water and wind. For another nature-focused experience, the “Natura în culori” (“Nature in Colours”) trail is located in the Scărița-Belioara Nature Reserve, on the Șesul Craiului limestone plateau.

Hiking Trails and a Cave

The Circuitul Tăurilor is an easy, waymarked hiking trail that starts in the central square of Roșia Montană. Its easy rating and fixed starting point give you clear guidance when choosing a hike; conditions may vary depending on the season. The Scărița-Belioara trail can be reached via Muntele-Băișoara, Poșaga or Ocoliș. Local road conditions may change.

Ghețarul de la Vârtop is a karst cave in the Apuseni Mountains. Its features include an underground glacier that remains year-round and more than 300 metres of galleries. The cave can be reached on foot in about 30 to 40 minutes from Casa de Piatră in the commune of Arieșeni, Alba County; seasonal conditions may affect access. Monasteries and History

Râmeț Monastery is one of the oldest monastic settlements in Transylvania. Inside, the third layer of frescoes was painted in 1377 by Mihu of Crișul Alb. This historical focus differs from the mining traces at Roșia Montană and the landscape features of Cheile Râmețului.

In Alba Iulia, on 1 December 1918, the 1,228 delegates of the Great National Assembly gathered in the Sala Unirii. They voted for the union of Transylvania with Romania. Visitors can see the delegates’ credentials, flags, medals, the camera used on 1 December 1918 and other artefacts related to the union; individual exhibits may change. The visit thus connects a precisely dated historical event with objects associated with it.

Regional Cuisine
