Tău Bistra: Reservoir, Rock Landscapes and Cultural History
Accommodation in Tău Bistra
For a trip to Tău Bistra, you can focus on natural formations, a water landscape shaped by engineering, a circular route, or the history of Oașa Monastery. These places differ considerably: from a 0.20-hectare natural monument area to a route with an approximate duration and a wooden church with several historical milestones. This lets you plan your trip around what interests you most—landscape and geology, outdoor activity or cultural history.
Reservoir and Rock Landscapes
The Tău Bistra Reservoir was built for hydroelectric power generation and can also be visited by tourists. It lies behind a 78-meter-high arched concrete dam. If you are interested in engineering structures and water landscapes, this place brings both subjects together.
On the right bank of the Sebeș and very close to the DN 67C, the Transalpina, lies the rock formation Masa Jidovului, also called Masa Uriașului. It consists of crystalline schist and forms an isolated, table-like platform. As a natural monument, it is located in the village of Tău Bistra, in Șugag commune; the protected area covers 0.20 hectares. Its name, geological form and protected status offer different points of interest when exploring the rock.
Stânca Grunzii, also called La Grumaji, lies at a sharply narrowed section of the valley that resembles a wild gorge. The rock formation consists of crystalline schist; the river makes several winding bends there. Unlike the isolated, table-like platform of Masa Jidovului, the narrow valley and the course of the river shape the landscape here.
Circular Route at Șureanu
The Poarta Raiului–Prisaca circular route runs at the foot of the Șureanu Mountains and goes around the peak of Vf. Canciu, at 1,766 meters. The trail is easy and suitable for families, with only small changes in elevation. It takes approximately three to four hours. These details answer different planning questions: the approximate duration gives you a time frame, while the elevation changes and difficulty rating describe the character of the tour. The circular route is also recommended for cycling tourism. Depending on your interests, you can weigh up a hike or a bike ride. Trail conditions and signage can vary by season; check both before setting off.
Șureanu Ski Area
The Șureanu ski area is located on DJ709K in Tău Bistra, Alba County. This location gives you a specific point of reference if you choose to make Șureanu a separate focus of your trip planning.
Oașa Monastery and Its History
The wooden church of Oașa Monastery was founded in 1943 by the writer Mihail Sadoveanu. In 1983, during construction of the Oașa Reservoir and Oașa Dam, it was moved to its current location in the Poarta Raiului clearing. Its founding and relocation are two distinct milestones in its history: it was founded in 1943 and moved to its present location in 1983.
Oașa Monastery in Tău Bistra organizes youth camps focused on spirituality, tradition and culture. Dates for individual camps may vary. If you are interested in a specific camp, check its dates.
