Șugag connects the Transalpina with regional cultural heritage and striking landscapes. Within the commune, the DN67C, the Transalpina, forms the backbone of the road network and runs for 62 kilometers. The surrounding tourist area also includes rock formations, botanical reserves and the Oașa Reservoir. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether the mountain route, natural features or local traditions should be the focus of your stay.

Transalpina and Oașa Reservoir

The Transalpina, also known as “Drumul Regelui” (“The King’s Road”), crosses the Parâng Mountains and connects Sebeș with Novaci. In the tourist area around Șugag, it passes over the Oașa Dam. Alpine landscapes and winding roads shape the character of the route; within the commune, the DN67C is also an important road-network artery. Near Șugag, the Sebeș Valley opens out broadly.

Lake Oașa is a 460-hectare reservoir that extends for six kilometers. The reservoir can be used for tourism. At Lake Oașa, you can watch the sunrise, take nature photographs and walk along the shore. The waterside landscape thus offers various ways to experience nature, while the Transalpina as a road route brings alpine scenery and winding stretches to the fore.

Rocks and botanical reserves

Among the distinctive rock formations are the Pintenii din Coasta Jinei: isolated, prominent rocks of crystalline schist at an elevation of 750 to 900 meters. Masa Jidovului is also an isolated rock of crystalline schist. It lies on the right-hand slope of the Sebeș Valley above Șugag. The Pintenii are characterized by their striking form and elevation, while Masa Jidovului is notable for its position above the valley.

Two botanical reserves are located at higher elevations in the surrounding tourist area. Tinoavele din Luncile Prigoanei is situated in the upper reaches of the Prigoana stream at an elevation of 1,380 to 1,450 meters. Tinoavele din Lunca Tărtărăului lies above Lake Oașa. The areas offer distinct landscape features: the upper stream and high elevation characterize Luncile Prigoanei, while Lunca Tărtărăului is distinguished by its position above the lake.

Crafts, collection and monuments

Șugag is associated with wood-carving traditions. These include winged distaffs, chain-linked spoons, spindles, cheese molds, shepherds’ staffs and flutes. The “Nicolae Cernat” museum collection includes handcrafted objects made by the late artisan. You can view these objects as another facet of the place alongside its landscapes: an expression of traditional forms of local craftsmanship.

Monuments also offer insight into local commemoration. A bronze bust of the renowned lawyer and writer Ionel Pop was unveiled and consecrated in the center of the commune. Residents erected the monument to the Romanian fallen of the First World War in 1935 to commemorate the Romanian heroes who died in the war.

Festivals and experiences throughout the year

The “Zi-i bade cu fluiera” folk festival is held every year in the second half of May. The custom “Statu’ la vase în Lunea Paştelui” takes place on Easter Monday in the churchyard of the commune of Șugag, in the Sebeș Valley; its exact date depends on the movable Easter calendar. The two cultural events are therefore scheduled differently: the folk festival takes place within a recurring period in May, while the custom follows Easter.

With “Potecu’ stânelor,” you can learn about traditional activities in the sheepfolds. As a themed walking route, “Potecu’ stânelor” connects several sheepfolds in the area. Whether you can take part in the activities depends on seasonal conditions. When planning your stay, you can thus distinguish between cultural events, landscape experiences and a seasonal glimpse into traditional activities.
