Vințu de Jos offers travelers a range of themes to consider when choosing a destination: historic buildings, local traditions and protected areas. Historic landmarks include a fortified Protestant church, the ruins of Martinuzzi Castle, Zebernic Fortress and a medieval Roman Catholic monastery. The natural areas offer their own distinctive features, from habitats for bird species to floodplain forests and aquatic life.

Cultural history across several periods

The fortified Protestant church of Vințu de Jos and its surrounding wall form a historic monument complex. The church dates from the 14th century. Four Gothic windows in the choir are of particular artistic value.

Another historic landmark is the ruin of the medieval Martinuzzi Castle in Vințu de Jos, Alba County. Between 1546 and 1551, Gheorghe Martinuzzi strengthened and expanded the castle in the Renaissance style. Martinuzzi was Governor of Transylvania, Bishop of Oradea and a cardinal.

The medieval Zebernic Fortress is distinct from the castle ruins. It is located in Valea Vințului, within the administrative area of Vințu de Jos; its origins date back to the mid-13th century. A surrounding wall, moat and defensive rampart protected the fortress. The medieval Roman Catholic monastery in Vințu de Jos is another separate complex, comprising a church, a cloister and a necropolis.

Local traditions and a fixed festival date

The village festival “Marie, draga Marie” takes place every year on August 15 in the commune of Vințu de Jos. If you want to plan your trip around this date, check the local information for the relevant edition.

The local cultural scene also includes the “Vintana” folklore ensemble, which brings together three generations of Călușeri dancers.
