Stremț Commune: Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Limestone Landscapes
Accommodation in Stremț Commune
The village of Stremț lies in the lower Geoagiu Valley, four kilometres from the town of Teiuș. In the west of the commune, the limestone ridge at Vârful Prisecii reaches an elevation of 1,150 metres. The valley and ridge provide two distinct focal points in the landscape, while cultural sites and customs reveal the destination’s rich history.
Landscapes of the Valley and Limestone Ridge
Saxicolous plants—those that grow in rocky habitats—grow on the limestone ridge. The species named include Saxifraga paniculata, Asperula capilata and Dianthus spiculifolius. By contrast, the floodplain of the lower Stremț Valley is visited by northern duck species such as Bucephala clangula and Clangula hiemalis in autumn and occasionally in winter. For nature enthusiasts, these features differ by habitat and season: limestone flora on the ridge, and seasonal ducks in the lower floodplain.
Traditions, Handicrafts and Gatherings
The Stremț ethnographic exhibition is housed in the cultural centre next to the library. Access is available on request, so it is best to arrange your visit in advance. The most significant exhibit is considered to be the traditional women’s and men’s costume. The exhibition also documents traditional weaving and the processing of wool, hemp and flax.
Traditional wooden furniture is also on display, including a farmhouse bed, a table and benches. The seasonal use of a loom is also demonstrated. Together, the clothing, textile crafts and furnishings offer insights into different aspects of traditional everyday life.
The Festivalul Cânepii is held annually in August and promotes customs and crafts related to hemp cultivation. Another kind of cultural gathering is the Sărbătoarea Fii satului, held annually in every village in the commune and featuring cultural and artistic events. The hemp-themed festival thus differs from the gatherings held in each individual village.
Cultural Route and Historic Sites
Stremț was first mentioned in a document in 1332 under the name sacerdos de Kyod „Dyod“. The Drumul Icoanei cultural route connects Alba Iulia, Teiuș, Stremț, Geoagiu de Sus and Valea Mănăstirii. Its focus is the significance of faith in the lives of Romanians in Transylvania and their artistic expression.
In Geoagiu de Sus stands the 16th-century episcopal church. Of the church’s two layers of frescoes, the later one dates from 1724. Cetatea Diodului provides another architectural highlight: its rectangular plan is considered unusual in Transylvania. The route, church and fortress offer different perspectives on religious history, art and architecture.
