Jidvei: Wine Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Jidvei
The wine-growing landscape of the Jidvei wine region lies between the Târnava Mică and Târnava Mare rivers. Its hills and valleys are covered with vineyards. Winegrowing is therefore a defining way to experience the region; the Evangelical church, Ethnographic Museum, and annual folklore festival offer their own cultural themes for planning a trip.
Wine Landscape and Regional Wines
The history of individual grape varieties is also part of Jidvei’s connection to wine: Fetească Regală was discovered near the town at the beginning of the 20th century. The protected designation of origin “Jidvei” covers white, rosé, and red wines, as well as sparkling, semi-sparkling, and liqueur wines. They are made from grape varieties grown in Alba County in central-western Romania.
The Jidvei company owns 2,500 hectares of vineyards, which it describes as the largest vineyard area belonging to a single owner in Romania and Europe.
Wine Routes and Events
Wine tastings are among the experiences offered on the Jidvei Wine Land Trails. They are reserved for people over 18 and are led by Jidvei sommeliers. Reservations are made after registering for one of the competitions. The program also includes a visit to Crama Jidvei; reservations for this visit are likewise made after registering for one of the competitions. These activities are therefore tied to this event program.
A distinct point of reference is the signposted wine route “Drumul vinului,” which passes through Jidvei. As route details may change, it is worth checking the route before planning. The National Folklore Festival “Strugurele de Aur” is also held annually in Jidvei. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.
Church, Museum, and Local History
The bell tower of Jidvei’s Evangelical church was built in 1508. It stands ten meters north of the church building. A fire-warning bell at the church bears an inscription dated 1681. The Evangelical church complex is one of Romania’s historic monuments and dates from the 15th to the 18th century. Together, the tower, bell, and complex offer different ways to explore the town’s history.
The Jidvei Ethnographic Museum is located at Strada Unirii 2D. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the town with a specific museum destination, with the church complex as another cultural attraction. The places and events mentioned offer different points of interest: historic buildings and bells, an ethnographic collection, folklore, or winegrowing.
