Sălciua de Jos – Trails, Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Sălciua de Jos
Sălciua de Jos offers a range of starting points for a trip: trails to natural attractions, caves and rock formations, as well as insights into regional cultural history. Each destination has a different focus. At Peștera Poarta Zmeilor, the cave and rock arch take center stage, while Balconul de la Poarta Zmeilor offers scenic views and a longer ascent. A waterfall, monastery and museum add to the picture. You can plan your stay around the themes that interest you most.
Caves, Rocks and Scenic Views
Peștera Poarta Zmeilor is in Sub Piatră, in the Comuna Sălciua, at an altitude of about 1,150 m in the western Trascău Mountains. The natural arch Poarta Zmeilor is just 15 m from the cave entrance. It was formed through erosion, corrosion and the dissolution of limestone. The cave and arch are therefore close together, but show different forms in the landscape: here, the cave entrance; there, a rock arch formed by geological processes.
Peștera Huda lui Papară is another cave worth noting. Its 2,022 m of galleries are richly adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is classified as a Class A cave of exceptional value and represents Romania’s national and international speleological heritage. The length of the galleries and their stalactite and stalagmite formations illustrate two specific aspects of this natural heritage.
Balconul de la Poarta Zmeilor is a wooden structure suspended from a rock face. From there, it offers a panoramic view spanning approximately 180 degrees. The red-cross-marked trail to the viewing balcony starts in the center of Sălciua de Jos; the ascent can take up to three hours. For planning purposes, the information about the cave and the balcony differs: access to the cave on foot is described as difficult, while an ascent of up to three hours is specified for the balcony.
Trails and Natural Attractions
Access to Peștera Poarta Zmeilor is via the DN 75 through the center of Sălciua de Jos. From there, continue along the unpaved DC 130 and then follow a red-marked footpath. This path is challenging. As road and trail conditions can change, check them before setting out. On April 21, 2026, hiking trail 10MN04 between Peștera Poarta Zmeilor and Izvoarele on the Bedeleu Plateau was temporarily closed. Check its current status before planning a hike along this trail.
In the Vânătările Ponorului nature reserve, Cascada Dâlbina plunges 25 m over a limestone wall. From Sălciua de Jos, access to the area is via the DC 105 through Sub Piatră in the direction of Valea în Jos or Valea Poienii. The waterfall and nature reserve provide another natural highlight alongside the caves and viewpoint. These routes and destinations can be considered separately when planning, rather than being combined into a single route without checking.
Culture and History
The Romanian Orthodox church of Mănăstirea Sub Piatra was built in 1797. The monastery preserves valuable icons from the former monastery, including a Deisis icon and icons dating from 1753. To get there, take the DN 75 towards Sălciua de Jos, then turn left and travel 5 km to Sub Piatră. The church and the preserved icons give the cultural heritage both an architectural and an art-historical dimension.
The Valer Butură Ethnographic Museum in Sălciua was inaugurated on October 20, 2010, and named after the ethnographer Valer Butură. In two rooms, it displays traditional household items, including a loom, a bed, dishes and traditional costumes. The museum is housed in a Moțe house with a wooden veranda and a thatched roof. The collection and the building thus convey different aspects of everyday life: household items alongside the traditional architectural style of the house.
Târgul de la Sălciua is also part of the region’s history. The tradition began in 1909 with two annual fairs: Târgul Mieilor on April 4 and Târgul oilor on October 20. Four revived editions featured livestock shows, folk performances, art exhibitions and presentations of local traditions. This history complements the natural attractions with a cultural perspective on markets and community events.
