Câmpeni brings together places of cultural and historical interest with the landscape of the central Apuseni Mountains. Museums, churches, Valea Bistrii Monastery, and the Mocănița Apusenilor give a stay different points of focus. If you are looking for a hotel in Câmpeni, it helps to first decide whether you are most interested in the history of the uprisings, the churches and monastic sites, or a train ride. This way, you can plan your time around specific themes.

Museums and the History of the Uprisings

The Muzeul „Avram Iancu” Câmpeni is housed in the building that served Avram Iancu as the headquarters of the Auraria Gemina Legion during the 1848–1849 Revolution. The first hall looks further back in time: exhibits and materials cover the ancient and prehistoric history of the local region. Early regional history and a specific 19th-century site thus sit side by side in the same museum.

The Muzeul „Beciul lui Horea” recalls the events that led to the uprising of Horea, Cloșca, and Crișan. These include the Câmpeni spring market on May 24, 1782. The museum contains the „POARTA,” dating from that period, seven display cases with historical documents and objects, and a mural of Horea, Cloșca, and Crișan. At the market, Mediu was described as a traditional drink of the Moți—a historical reference that adds to the story of that day.

Câmpeni became the center of the 1784 uprising. In November 1784, Horea set up his headquarters here and led the fighting against the oppressive authorities from there with Cloșca, Crișan, and other close associates. These events provide a broader context for the museums: the places and names are connected to a specific historical development.

Churches, Monastery, and Local Places of Remembrance

The Biserica din Deal has been documented since 1550 and is probably considerably older. The graves of Avram Iancu’s followers lie in the cemetery behind it: Preotul Iosiv Gomboș, Nicolae Corches, and Mihail Andreica. Avram Iancu’s equestrian statue was brought from Târgu Mureș to Câmpeni in autumn 1940 and placed there on a prepared stone plinth. The bust of Avram Iancu is in the courtyard of Colegiul Național „Avram Iancu” in Câmpeni.

The Biserica din Vale was built from 1906 to March 1, 1911. It follows the style of Transylvanian churches and is built as a single-nave structure. In the Bistrii Valley in Câmpeni, in the Apuseni Mountains, stands Valea Bistrii Monastery, dedicated to the Holy Hierarchs Ilie Iorest and Sava Brancovici. It was initially a nuns’ skete; on September 28, 2012, it was elevated to a monastery with the approval of the Metropolitan Synod of the Metropolis of Transylvania. The church’s construction history and the monastery’s institutional development offer different perspectives on Câmpeni’s religious history.

Landscape, Cultural Routes, and Train Ride

Câmpeni lies in a depression basin crossed by the Arieș in the central Apuseni Mountains. The area ranges from 550 meters at the confluence of the Arieș Valley and Bistra Valley to 1,597 meters at the summit of Runcului. These elevations mark the topographical setting between the named valley reference points and the summit. The landscape thus adds its own perspective on the region to its historical sites.

Cultural routes also pass through Câmpeni. The Alba Regalis cultural route runs through the town; one of its stops there is the Podul „Regele Ferdinand”. The Ruta Unității Naționale also passes through Câmpeni and is part of a cultural route about 150 kilometers long through Alba County. Together, the routes offer another way to explore the area’s cultural history, alongside its museums and places of remembrance.

The Mocănița Apusenilor is a historic tourist train offering scenic rides through the Apuseni Mountains and insights into local traditions. It runs from Câmpeni railway station to Cărpiniș near Abrud; the round trip takes about two hours. This makes the train ride a distinct activity with a defined duration that you can fit into your stay. Operating dates and departures may vary, so confirm the departure before traveling.

Practical Information

To reach Valea Bistrii Monastery, turn left from the DN 75, which runs from Câmpeni to Bistra, onto the DC 141. After about 200 meters, a sign indicates the entrance to the monastery.
