Neusiedl am See: Water Sports and History
Accommodation in Neusiedl Am See
Neusiedl am See lido is located right on the shore of Lake Neusiedl. As early as 1927, people were splashing, sunbathing and sailing at Neusiedl am See lido. Water sports, play areas and historic sites give a trip to Neusiedl am See a variety of themes—from time by the water to culture and regional events.
Lido, sailing and harbours
At the lido, visitors can enjoy stand-up paddleboarding, sailing, surfing, wing foiling and kitesurfing. A sailing and surfing school offers guidance and courses; availability may vary seasonally. The Federal Performance Centre in Neusiedl am See also provides training facilities for world champions and Olympic champions.
The lido also has an interactive water spray park, a water-and-mud play area, a children’s pool with a slide and large play lawns. Families travelling with children can make these play and water areas a focus of their visit; they complement the water sports on offer. This makes it possible to enjoy the lido’s different features without reducing them to a single activity.
The harbour complex comprises the East Harbour and the West Harbour. The East Harbour has 90 berths, while the West Harbour has 250. These figures may change; if berth capacity is important to your plans, check the latest information in advance. The two harbour areas also differ clearly in terms of numbers: the West Harbour has more berths than the East Harbour.
Cycling and nature experiences
The B10 cycle route around Lake Neusiedl is 135 kilometres long, of which 38 kilometres run through Hungary. This means the route as described includes a cross-border section. If you would like to include cycling in your trip, you can take the route’s length and international course into account when planning.
Neusiedler See–Seewinkel National Park protects a border region with enormous biodiversity and is Austria’s only steppe national park. Birdwatching, canoe trips, solar-powered boat tours and cycling excursions are among the ways to experience the national park. These activities offer a distinct focus on nature and outdoor pursuits when planning your trip.
Tabor ruins and places of remembrance
The Tabor ruins date back to the Middle Ages; their masonry points to the 14th or 15th century. During the Kuruc Wars, the site served as a refuge. The towering walls offer views across the town and the lake. At Tabor, architectural history, historical context and views of the surrounding area come together.
Other places also tell different chapters of history. The Plague Column, also known as the Trinity Cross, stands on the main square in Neusiedl am See. It was erected in 1713 after the last major year of plague. The Calvary Hill is designated a natural monument.
The Serbian / War Memorial is a five-metre-high concrete obelisk topped by a concrete bird, the “Turul”. As a memorial and warning monument, it commemorates events of the First World War. The Holocaust memorial in the church park was inaugurated in June 2021. These monuments differ both in their design and in the history of remembrance associated with each.
Culture and recurring events
At Haus im Puls, the private cultural association IMPULSE organises around 50 events each year. Martiniloben is another recurring tradition: it takes place every year around 11 November. Over two days, winemakers open their cellar doors and offer tastings of the new wine. If you want to plan your trip around Martiniloben, check the exact event dates in advance.
