Apetlon: Cycling Routes, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Apetlon
If you are choosing a destination in the Seewinkel region, Apetlon offers a range of options: cycling routes, birdlife, walking trails and culture in the town centre. The town is located on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl in the typical steppe landscape known as the “Little Puszta of the Seewinkel”, and also lies in the heart of Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the landscape, trails and local history as separate activities.
Salt Lakes, Landscape and Birdlife
Nearby, Lange Lacke is the largest of more than 40 salt lakes in the Seewinkel and an important part of the national park. The landscape around Lange Lacke near Apetlon is characterised by diverse birdlife, with thousands of birds. Another natural attraction is Darscho-Warmsee, about two kilometres north of the town on the B20 Lacken cycle route. In spring, summer and autumn, it serves as a breeding and resting place for birds. If birdlife and habitats are important to your trip, this seasonal detail can help with planning.
Apetlon swimming lake was created from a former gravel pit and is located in the heart of an internationally recognised protected area. It offers clear water and spacious facilities for swimming and relaxing; admission is free. So, in addition to the salt lakes and trails, there is also a swimming spot to enjoy locally.
Cycling and Trails Through the Seewinkel
The paved B27 Lange Lacke cycle route starts in Apetlon and leads to Pamhagen. The Lacken cycle route offers a different experience: it passes numerous salt lakes, wet meadows, pastures and vineyards, and runs through Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park. When planning, you can choose between a named route connecting Apetlon and Pamhagen and a trail that passes through a variety of landscapes.
The Lange Lacke Tour can be started from Apetlon. You can leave your car at the Nationalpark-StĂĽberl; along the route, observation hides and viewing platforms invite you to watch wildlife. A circular route in the nearby area goes from the car park at the NationalparkstĂĽberl via Seewinkelhof around Lange Lacke and Warmsee, also called Darscho, and returns to the NationalparkstĂĽberl via Martenhof.
There is also an extensive network of running and walking routes: the Neusiedler See-Seewinkel Running Park covers around 340 kilometres of routes and connects Apetlon with Illmitz, Podersdorf, Mönchhof, Frauenkirchen, St. Andrä and Vila Vita. Individual routes range from one to 16 kilometres. The Lacken riding and walking route between St. Andrä and Apetlon is a circular trail for horse riding and walking; along the way, you can observe storks, avocets and herons. Rosalienkapelle is a starting point for walks through Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park.
Local History and Culture
In the town centre is the baroque Hufnaglhaus, one of the last surviving houses in the typical Burgenland style. It is estimated to be about 250 years old and is considered Apetlon’s unofficial landmark. A family of white storks regularly nests on the house’s chimney. The building thus combines a striking example of local architecture with a recurring connection to birdlife.
The parish church of St Margaret is also in the town centre. Construction in the Baroque style began in 1792; the façade tower with its stone helmet was built five years later. A cultural walk through Apetlon includes ten stops, visits cultural monuments and offers insights into village life as well as background information. This gives you the chance to learn about local history beyond individual buildings.
Church Fair Throughout the Year
Apetlon’s Kirtag is a church fair featuring a market and events, held over two weekends. If the festival is important for your travel dates, check the exact dates and annual programme in advance.
