Frauenkirchen: Baroque Architecture and Jewish Heritage
Accommodation in Frauenkirchen
When looking for a hotel in Frauenkirchen, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: Baroque sacred architecture, Jewish heritage and remembrance, or routes through the landscape. The Basilica of “Maria auf der Heide” and Calvary are the main sacred sites. The Garden of Remembrance and the Jewish Cemetery offer a different focus on Jewish remembrance; in the warmer months, there are also routes around Frauenkirchen to explore.
Basilica and Calvary
The Baroque Basilica of “Maria auf der Heide” is a spiritual and religious centre on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl. Frauenkirchen has been a much-visited pilgrimage site since ancient times. The bright interior comprises four bays, eight side altars and a richly decorated, painted barrel vault with lunettes. A bay is a section of the interior’s layout; a barrel vault with lunettes is a barrel-shaped vault with side lunettes. This makes it possible to look at the architectural elements individually: the layout of the space, the side altars and the design of the vault. The basilica is open daily from 06:00 to 21:00; check the times before your visit, as opening information may change.
Calvary offers a different Baroque accent. It was built around 1685; Prince Paul Esterházy commissioned it alongside the basilica. Its path winds upwards in a spiral three times to a small plateau, where a stone Crucifixion group dating from 1759 stands. While the basilica foregrounds the design of its interior, at Calvary the winding path, plateau and Crucifixion group define the scene. Calvary is a listed monument and is considered one of Austria’s most significant Baroque monuments.
Jewish places of remembrance
The Garden of Remembrance stands on the site of the former temple and illustrates the history of Frauenkirchen’s Jewish community. The Jewish Cemetery in Frauenkirchen is another place of remembrance, with around 1,320 graves. The two sites offer different perspectives: the garden recalls the former temple site and the history of the community, while the cemetery’s graves convey another form of remembrance. The approximate figure of around 1,320 graves gives a sense of its scale.
Routes through the landscape
In the warmer months, numerous hiking, running and cycling routes around Frauenkirchen pass through a natural landscape of salt lakes, pastures, vineyards, fields and small woods. The different types of routes make it possible to experience the surroundings on foot, while running or by bike. If outdoor activities are part of your stay, the warmer months are a seasonal factor to consider when planning.
For cyclists, the Neusiedler See Cultural Cycle Route is another named point of reference: it includes Frauenkirchen and is 27.64 km long. This stated length applies to the entire cycle route and provides a specific figure to help with travel planning. Together with the hiking and running routes, it offers a different perspective on a stay than a visit to the sacred sites and places of Jewish remembrance.
