If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Winden am See, it helps to first get a sense of the town’s character. Winden am See retains the character of a Burgenland winegrowing community and is part of the Neusiedler See – Leithagebirge Nature Park. The town lies between the gently sloping hills of the Leithagebirge and the northern shore of Lake Neusiedl; vineyards, meadows and fields surround it. Winegrowing, landscape and culture are therefore the main points to consider when deciding whether the town suits your travel interests.

Trails, Wine Country and Lake Views

Cycling and hiking trails around Winden am See and in the nearby Leithagebirge pass through vineyards and meadows. The cycling trail around Lake Neusiedl runs alongside Winden’s cellar district. From Kirchberg, you can enjoy a view of the 36-kilometre-long Lake Neusiedl. The viewpoint on Kirchberg is best reached on foot or by bicycle. This gives you two different perspectives: trails through wine country and meadows, and a view of the lake from Kirchberg.

Art and History

At the Wander Bertoni Open-Air Museum, visitors can view around 600 sculptures, as well as numerous models and graphic works. The site includes a gallery, a sculpture park, an exhibition pavilion and an open-air area with large-scale sculptures. The Egg Museum at the open-air museum displays around 4,000 exhibits from around the world. Here you will find distinct collections: Bertoni’s sculptures, models and graphic works, alongside the international egg collection. In the 1960s, local sculptor Wander Bertoni created the sculpture “The Sun Worshipper” at the highest point of Kirchberg.

The town also reflects its architectural and commemorative history. The parish church of St Florian was built in 1725 and renovated in 1984. The plague column, erected in 1646, commemorates the plague. Bärenhöhle – Ludlloch has been protected as a federal monument since 4 February 1929. The church, column and cave represent different historical points of reference: a church building, a memorial and a cave with protected monument status.
