Mönchhof: Wine, Cycling Routes and Village History
Accommodation in Mönchhof
Mönchhof offers several distinct reasons to stay: wine tastings, routes for cycling and hiking, and insights into village history. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether wine, outdoor activities or culture will be the focus of your trip. The options below will help you organise places to visit and travel dates according to your interests, without combining different offerings into a single programme.
Wine Tastings and Events
Visitors can taste Mönchhof wines directly with the winemakers. Wine tastings are available daily at the Anna Hoffmann winery. The winery’s Heuriger serves traditional Heuriger snacks with its wines. A visit there therefore combines wine tasting with traditional Heuriger cuisine.
During the Mönchhof Wine & Culture Days, 15 businesses open their cellar doors and invite visitors to a varied programme centred on wine, cuisine and culture. Dates and participating businesses may change; if you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the latest information in advance. The annual Martiniloben in autumn is a separate event: at this Burgenland wine-blessing festival, the new vintage is tasted while cellar doors are also opened. You can therefore choose dates according to your preferred focus: culture and cuisine during the Wine & Culture Days, or the wine blessing and new vintage at Martiniloben.
By Bike or on Foot
The B23 cultural cycle path leads to Mönchhof from Frauenkirchen, Gols and Halbturn. For cyclists, it provides a direct connection between the three named places and Mönchhof. The well-developed cycling routes in Mönchhof can also be used as walking paths. When planning, you can consider two separate questions: how the B23 connects the town, and whether you would like to use the local cycling routes by bike or on foot.
Village Museum and Historic Sites
The Mönchhof Village Museum offers insights into everyday village life and farming on the Heideboden from around 1890 to the 1960s. It comprises around 35 reconstructed buildings, all of which originate from the Heideboden. The buildings and the museum’s themes offer two different ways to explore: you can focus on the structures from the Heideboden or on insights into village life and farming.
At the former Mönchhof railway station, you can visit three fully furnished railway carriages. The museum’s craft days offer a different way to discover past occupations: visitors can experience traditional skills in the workshops. The carriages and workshops have different focuses—here you can see furnished railway carriages, while there the emphasis is on historic skills.
The historic tour also offers a specific point of interest: the Cholera Chapel is a highlight of the tour in Mönchhof. The Schüttkasten (former granary) highlights an earlier use; from 1673, it served Heiligenkreuz Abbey as a wine cellar and grain store. These offer two different ways to explore history: the chapel as a highlight of a tour, and the Schüttkasten’s former role in storing wine and grain.
