Podersdorf am See lies amid the landscape of Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park on Lake Neusiedl. Water sports, nature trails and historic buildings offer a range of things to consider when planning a trip. Activities on the water sit alongside excursions into the natural environment, cycling and hiking routes, as well as cultural history and wine.

Water Sports and Landmarks on the Lake

PODOBEACH on Lake Neusiedl stretches for two kilometres. When the wind is likely and the water is shallow, the north beach offers good conditions for kitesurfing. There are four kitesurfing schools, surf shops and good beach facilities there. The north beach also has six beach volleyball courts.

The PODOactive area at PODOBEACH offers kitesurfing, surfing and stand-up paddleboarding. Several water sports are available at the beach; the special conditions for kitesurfing apply to the north beach.

At the western edge of the village, beside the small harbour, stands the approximately twelve-metre-high lighthouse of Podersdorf am See. It was originally built as a navigational aid and to relay storm warnings to water sports enthusiasts. Today, the lighthouse is a popular tourist attraction and photo spot. Its location by the harbour and its former purpose link this landmark with the history of navigation on the water.

Natural Environment, Excursions and Trails

Excursions through the national park give visitors an insight into the distinctive features of the Neusiedler See-Seewinkel natural environment. This offers a different way to explore nature than water sports on the shore: the focus is on the landscape and its special habitats.

The surrounding area can also be explored on foot and by bike. Gentle, well-signposted hiking routes around Podersdorf lead through nature reserves, wine villages and culturally rich landscapes. Along the cycle path by the lake embankment to Podersdorf, salt meadows and reed beds lie on the lakeside. The hiking trails thus open up the wider landscape around the village, while the cycle path along the embankment brings the lakeside, with its salt meadows and reed beds, into view.

A distinctive cycling experience is the mysterious adventure “The Evil Plan of the Lake Witch”, designed for the whole family. It adds a themed activity to the landscape route, without requiring a particular route length or duration.

Church and Windmill: Different Stories

The parish church of Podersdorf am See is a late Baroque building. It was built in 1796 to plans by the Viennese architect Pilgram. The original church had already been completely destroyed by the Turks in 1529 and 1683, and was subsequently rebuilt by the local population. The village’s history thus brings together repeated rebuilding and the creation of the late Baroque building.

The windmill of Podersdorf am See has been privately owned by the same family since 1849 and was in operation until 1926. It is considered a rarity and a cultural monument of the highest order, and is a protected historic building. It therefore offers insight into both its former use as a mill and its long history of ownership.

Wine and Sporting Tradition

The variety of wines from Podersdorf can be explored on a walk from one winegrower to the next. The Austria Triathlon has been part of Podersdorf since 1988 and is one of Austria’s longest-running triathlon events. Together, these themes complement activities on the lake with local wine variety and a longstanding connection to triathlon.
