Neusiedl am See combines trails through a distinctive landscape with activities on the lake, wine and culture. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different options: circular hiking trails, longer cycling routes and activities along the shore each offer something different. Tabor Ruins and Kalvarienberg Hill also shape the character of the town. When choosing where to stay, you can consider which of these aspects matters most for your trip.

Landscape and trails around Neusiedl am See

The natural landscape includes vast plains, gently rolling vineyards and Central Europe’s largest steppe lake. The cultural landscape of the Lake Neusiedl area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. There are more than 20 kilometres of hiking trails; most are circular routes and can be combined with one another. This gives you a choice of individual named trails as well as a larger network to suit different distance preferences.

The Kalvarienberg Trail runs for three kilometres from Nyikospark to Kalvarienberg Hill, passing Stations of the Cross. On the hill itself, a Way of the Cross winds through rare plants; the provincial government has designated the hill a natural monument. Another three-kilometre route is the Kuruzzen Trail, which runs from the main square to Tabor Ruins and returns to the town centre via Berggasse, passing former manor houses. The approximately five-kilometre Martalwald Trail is a woodland walk featuring wayside shrines long since forgotten. The distances make clear the difference between these individual trails and the more extensive network.

Cycling routes with different distance profiles

For cycling trips, there are several designated routes with clearly differing lengths and connections. The B10 cycling route around Lake Neusiedl is 135 kilometres long; 38 kilometres of it run through Hungary. The route has few changes in elevation and is well developed. Check route conditions before setting off. The 31-kilometre B21 connecting cycle route links the B10 with the Danube Cycle Path. Another option is the 51-kilometre B29 Windradweg circular route, which connects Neusiedl am See with Parndorf. Comparing the distances and the stated connections or circular-route format can help you choose the right cycling route for your plans.

Water sports and time by the lake

Neusiedl am See lido is right on the shore. Since 1927, it has offered opportunities for swimming, sunbathing and sailing. Other activities include stand-up paddleboarding, surfing, wingfoiling and kitesurfing; a sailing and surf school offers assistance and courses. Facilities also include an interactive water-spray park, a water-and-mud play area, a children’s pool with a slide and large play lawns. Sports activities and facilities may operate seasonally; check the season before your visit.

Stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Neusiedl is suitable for different groups, including friends, families, companies and school classes. If you are planning this activity, check the seasonal availability of equipment and providers. This helps ensure your plans fit the period when it is actually offered, without assuming that water sports and swimming facilities are available year-round.

Wine, tradition and culture

Wines from Neusiedl’s winemakers can be tasted and purchased at the winery or at the Weinwerk Burgenland wine shop. Check the tasting arrangements before visiting. A special opportunity is Martiniloben, held annually around 11 November: for two days, winemakers open their cellar doors and offer new wine for tasting. The exact dates vary from year to year.

Tabor Ruins are the remains of a medieval castle on a hill. They offer views over the town of Neusiedl am See and the lake; the construction of the walls suggests they date from the 14th or 15th century. With its Way of the Cross and rare plants, Kalvarienberg Hill brings together religious and landscape features. For other cultural interests, moq ART NOW Gallery regularly hosts exhibitions by local artists, as well as readings, concerts and wine tastings. Programme details may change.
